Custom Windows cursors reverting to the system default

After the latest Windows 11 operating system update, my mouse pointer continues to work visually, except for the “normal selection”—which still only displays the system's default cursor scheme. Regardless of whether I apply another custom scheme from Windows itself or one I added to the system myself, none of the pointers seem to appear properly. They all revert to the system's default.

Could anyone help me with this?

The same issue occurred to me after updating my pc. My cursor is stuck on the Windows default pointer. I'd like to add to this Q&A that my background was reset to a black screen as well. I'm not sure if that's normal - for it being part of the known bugs with this update.

I am also experiencing this problem right now i guess we need to wait for a hotfix or something i hope they fix it soon because i love my custom crosshair

Yes, the wallpaper changing is also

part of the same Known Issue.

Hi Larissa,

There is a Known Issue with this latest update.

You either have to uninstall that update and

Pause til a fix is released or just deal with it

for now.

This matches a currently reported Windows 11 issue affecting cursor personalization after recent updates.

Microsoft has received reports that mouse cursor personalization settings can be changed or reverted to standard settings after installing updates released August 27, 2026 (KB5120998) and later. Reported symptoms include:

high-DPI cursors being replaced with larger white cursors
custom cursor animations reverting to standard settings
attempts to restore previous cursor customization not succeeding

Affected platforms listed for this cursor customization issue are Windows 11, version 24H2 and Windows 11, version 25H2.

What to do now:

Press Windows key + F to open Feedback Hub.
File a report for the cursor customization issue.
If direct help is needed on a home PC, use the Get Help app in Windows or contact Microsoft Support.

At this time, Microsoft states that the issue is under investigation and that more information will be provided when available.
