Using New Outlook on Windows for professional communication and productivity
Hi Alexis,
Thank you for taking the time to share this suggestion.
I completely understand how challenging it can be to locate a specific decision, date, attachment, or response from a particular sender within a lengthy email conversation.
At present, New Outlook for Windows does not include a dedicated "search within conversation" feature that allows searches to be limited to the currently opened email thread. While Outlook can organize related messages into conversations, the available conversation settings are designed primarily to control how messages are displayed, such as grouping emails by conversation or conversation branches.
As an alternative, you can use Outlook's main search bar together with the conversation subject and additional search filters. For example:
-
subject:"Project Update" "approval" -
subject:"Project Update" from:"Name" -
subject:"Project Update" hasattachment:yes -
subject:"Project Update" received:"last month"
Outlook supports a variety of search operators, including subject, sender, attachment, date, and exact-phrase searches. Because messages within the same conversation typically share the same subject line, combining the subject: filter with other search criteria can help narrow results to content related to a specific email thread.

Regarding future plans, I was unable to find any publicly available Microsoft 365 roadmap item or New Outlook release note confirming that a conversation-specific search feature is currently planned. As a result, I cannot provide a confirmed timeline or guarantee whether this functionality will be introduced in a future update.
That said, I agree this would be a valuable enhancement, particularly for users who frequently work with long email chains. I encourage you to submit or vote for this idea through the Outlook (new) · Community portal. Feedback submitted there helps the Outlook product team better understand customer needs and prioritize future improvements.
If you have any additional questions or would like further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know.
Kind regards.
