Can't add people to Private Channels in a Team

I am trying to add people to private channels in my Team (they are all in the main Team), but when I go to add them to a private channel, I get an error that says "Looks like there was an issue. Try adding this person. If it doesn't work, ask your IT admin to add them."

I have the same issue on Mac, Windows, and mobile.

    Hi Michael,

    Regarding your concern, this is very likely a membership/permission issue. Being an owner of the main Team does not automatically make you an owner or member of every private channel. Only a current owner of that private channel can directly add or remove its members.

    You can check whether you're in a private channel by:

    • Open Teams and select the three dots next to the Team.
    • Select Manage team > Channels.
    • Find the private channel and check whether you are listed as a channel owner.
    • If you are only a main Team owner, you need to ask an existing private-channel owner to:
      • Add you as a member of the private channel.
      • Change your channel role to Owner, then you can try adding the other users.

    If the channel has no valid owner, you truly need to contact your company's IT administrator, as the error message indicates.

    Based on my research, this issue turns out to be related to a Microsoft service degradation, TM1462874, that causes users to be unable to access or manage Teams channels. At this time, no additional troubleshooting is required on your side.

    I recommend contacting your IT administrator and asking him/her to monitor incident TM1462874in the Microsoft 365 admin center > Service Health for the latest updates, as Microsoft is actively working on a resolution. Once the service has been fully restored, please update Teams to the latest version and restart the application if needed.
