A family of Microsoft presentation graphics products that offer tools for creating presentations and adding graphic effects like multimedia objects and special effects with text.
Try this in order:
- Restart the device Wait a few minutes, restart Windows, sign back in, and try opening Word, Excel, or PowerPoint again.
- Run an Office repair from Windows
Since Repair Now from the app did not fix it, run the full repair from Windows settings:
- Right-click Start
- Select Installed apps (Windows 11) or Apps and Features (Windows 10)
- Select Microsoft 365 or Office
- Select Modify
- If prompted, choose:
- Online Repair > Repair for Click-to-run installs
- Repair > Continue for MSI-based installs
- Test in Safe Mode to check add-ins
If the apps still fail to open, start them in Safe Mode:
- Press Windows key + R
- Run one of these commands:

excel /safe -
powerpnt /safe

- Go to File > Options > Add-Ins
- In Manage, select the app add-ins or COM Add-ins, then select Go
- Clear one add-in, select OK, then restart the app normally
- Repeat until the problematic add-in is identified
- If files themselves are damaged
If Office opens but a specific Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file does not, try:
- File > Open > Browse
- Select the file
- Select the arrow next to Open
- Select Open and Repair
- If double-clicking files opens the wrong app or fails
Repair the Office installation first. If needed, manually reset the file association in:
- Control Panel > Programs > Default Programs
- Under Set a default for a file type or link type, choose the correct Office app for the file type
If multiple Office versions are installed, uninstall the versions that are not needed, because that can cause files to open incorrectly.
