Hi @Lee Giles
The laptop's age or brand shouldn't affect whether a BitLocker recovery key works. A BitLocker recovery password is tied to a specific BitLocker key protector on that encrypted drive, so the first thing to verify is that you're using the correct key.
On the BitLocker recovery screen, note the Recovery Key ID. Then compare it with the Key ID stored for the device. The corresponding 48-digit recovery key must match that Key ID. Having a recovery key associated with the same laptop isn't sufficient if BitLocker has generated or rotated another key. Microsoft notes that multiple recovery passwords can exist for the same volume.
For an organization-managed device using Intune, check:
Intune admin center → Devices → All devices → affected device → Recovery keys → Show Recovery Key
Intune displays both the BitLocker Key ID and BitLocker Recovery Key, so you can verify you're using the correct protector. Access to the recovery key is also audited.
Alternatively, you can check the device in Microsoft Entra ID. Microsoft documents that you can view BitLocker keys backed up to Entra from the device details using Show Recovery Key.
If the Key ID displayed on the laptop doesn't exist in Intune/Entra, the key you're entering isn't the key currently protecting that drive. Check whether the device was previously joined to another tenant/account or whether the key was stored in AD DS or another recovery system.
If the Key ID matches exactly and the corresponding 48-digit password is still rejected, I'd capture the exact BitLocker recovery error. On current Windows versions, pressing Alt on the preboot recovery screen can display additional recovery information, including an error category and code that can help determine whether this is a TPM, protector, boot configuration, or other issue.
I wouldn't clear the TPM, reinstall Windows, or format the machine until you've verified the recovery-key ID. If no valid recovery protector is found, BitLocker encryption can't be bypassed to recover the encrypted data.
