Hello,

Every time I Press CTRL, my computer highlights the Windows search box in blue for a second (Picture includ Tabbing me out of any game and then it closes quickly if nothing is typed.

I have removed the keys and cleaned my keyboard and tested each key, so it cant be multiple keys held down. Issue

    Hi

Pressing Ctrl by itself should not open Windows Search/Start or switch tabs. Since Ctrl + Esc opens Start, this looks like Windows may be detecting an extra key press or a program is remapping Ctrl.

Please press Win + Ctrl + O to open the On-Screen Keyboard, then click Ctrl with your mouse. If this does not trigger the problem, the issue is likely related to the physical keyboard, its driver, or keyboard software.

I also noticed Armoury Crate in your screenshot. Please temporarily close Armoury Crate and any keyboard/macro/remapping software, then test Ctrl again.

If it still happens, open Device Manager > Keyboards > right-click the keyboard > Uninstall device, then restart Windows so the driver is reinstalled.

There is a similar Microsoft Q&A case where reinstalling the keyboard driver resolved abnormal Ctrl/Windows-key behavior.

Please also tell me whether this happens with the left Ctrl, right Ctrl, or both, and whether clicking Ctrl on the On-Screen Keyboard causes the same behavior.

This behavior usually points to an unintended keyboard input rather than Windows Search itself.

Since pressing Ctrl is pulling focus to Search and tabbing out of games, the most likely causes supported here are:

    1. Another key is being triggered with Ctrl
      • Windows key + S opens Search.
      • Alt + Tab switches windows.
      • Windows key opens Start.
If pressing Ctrl causes Search or task switching, the system may be receiving extra key input at the same time.
    2. Accessibility keyboard settings may be interfering If Sticky Keys, Filter Keys, or related keyboard settings were changed, key behavior can become abnormal.

    Try these steps:

    1. Open Settings with Windows key + I.
    2. If using Windows 10, go to Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard.
    3. Check keyboard accessibility options and toggle settings such as Sticky Keys or Filter Keys off, then test again.
    4. Disconnect any external input devices that could send keyboard commands, then test with only the main keyboard and mouse connected.
    5. Test with another keyboard, or use an external USB/Bluetooth keyboard if available.
      • If the other keyboard works normally, that strongly indicates a hardware problem with the current keyboard.
    6. If the issue continues only on the built-in keyboard, it is likely a hardware fault and may require service or replacement.

Relevant shortcuts involved in the symptoms:

    • Windows key + S = opens Search
    • Alt + Tab = switches windows
    • Windows key + I = opens Settings
