Microsoft Teams Chat Notifications Not Working

Hello,

I am experiencing an issue with Microsoft Teams notifications. When someone sends me a direct chat message in Microsoft Teams, I do not receive any notification.

The message itself is delivered successfully. I can see the new message when I open Teams and check the Chat section, and there are no issues with receiving messages. However, I do not receive the usual desktop notification when a new message arrives.

I have already checked and tried the following:

Teams Settings → Notifications and activity and confirmed that chat notifications are enabled.

  • Windows Settings → System → Notifications and confirmed that notifications are enabled .

Checked that Do Not Disturb/Focus/Quiet Hours are not preventing notifications.

Checked Teams activity and chat messages to confirm that messages are being received.

  • Restarted Microsoft Teams.
  • Reinstalled Microsoft Teams.

Restarted the computer.

Checked the notification settings multiple times.

Confirmed that other Windows notifications are working normally.

Despite checking these settings and trying the usual troubleshooting steps, I still do not receive notifications for incoming Teams chat messages.

My environment

Microsoft Teams: Desktop application

Windows: Windows 11

The computer is Microsoft Entra ID joined.

The issue occurs with incoming chat messages.

Messages are received correctly, but the notification does not appear.

Could this be related to the Teams desktop application, Windows notification services, Teams cache/profile, or an issue with the account/device configuration?

What additional troubleshooting steps or logs should I check to identify why Teams chat notifications are not appearing?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

    Hello,

Since the messages are delivered correctly, the issue appears to be limited to how notifications are generated or displayed. The Entra ID joined status alone is not enough to identify the cause, although a device policy could be relevant if the behavior occurs only on this managed computer.

Please start with Teams’ built-in notification test:

    1. Go to Teams > Settings and more > Settings > Notifications and activity.
    2. Under General, make sure Mute all notifications (except for calls and meetings) is turned off.
    3. Under Chats and channels, confirm that chat messages are configured to appear as a banner, not only in Activity.
    4. Select Test notification.

Microsoft documents these options here: Manage notifications in Microsoft Teams.

After running the test, press Win + N and check Windows Notification Center:

    • If the notification is listed there but no pop-up appears, open Windows Settings > System > Notifications > Microsoft Teams and specifically enable Show notification banners. The banner setting is a separate Teams client requirement: Teams client system requirements.
    • If neither the test notification nor the incoming chat appears, sign out of Teams, quit it completely from the system tray, and sign in again.
    • If the test notification works but actual chat notifications do not, select More options next to an affected chat and confirm that it is not muted. A muted chat still receives messages but does not generate normal notifications.

As an isolation test, quit the desktop client temporarily and sign in to Teams on the web using Edge or Chrome. Allow notifications for the site and test with more than one sender.

    • If notifications work on the web, the behavior is more likely limited to the desktop client or its Windows profile.
    • If the issue remains limited to the desktop app, you can reset its local data through Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Teams > Advanced options > Reset. This removes local Teams personalization settings and requires you to sign in again. Since Teams has already been reinstalled, consider this an additional isolation step rather than a guaranteed fix: Clear the Teams client cache.

For diagnostic logs, reproduce the problem and immediately press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + 1, or use Collect support files from the Teams system-tray icon. Record the exact time and time zone of the test. The files are saved in Downloads and are intended mainly for Microsoft Support; some parts can only be decrypted by Microsoft Support, so please do not post the logs publicly: Collect Teams client diagnostic logs.

If the problem continues, please reply with:

    • Whether Test notification appears or is listed under Win + N
    • Whether every direct chat is affected or only specific internal/external senders
    • Whether notifications work in Teams on the web or another device
    • Your Teams version from Settings > About Teams
