Error page when trying to login to sync notes on OneNote Android app + 404 support page

Hi, I have a bug on my OneNote app, specifically on my Android Google Pixel 9 (up to date). I have a popup at the top of my notes asking to login to sync my notes, but when I attempt to press the button to login, a new page appears that says "Error" with these informations:

Also, this link for Microsoft Support has a button "Ask the Microsoft Community" which leads to a 404 error page, making support impossible to find for Android OneNote elsewhere than here. I have talked with two chat agents who could not help me with either of these issues and I have been redirected to OneDrive support, if this post doesn't help.

    OneNote Android: “9hehw” sign-in error when opening Recent Pages

    I’m having a problem with OneNote on an Android phone that appears to be limited to the Recent Pages view.

    When I open OneNote, I get the message shown in Image 01:

    “Working offline. Sign in to sync your notes.”

    The app asks me to sign in. However, when I tap SIGN IN, I get the Microsoft error shown in Image 02:

    Something went wrong. [9hehw] Message: Access denied for the resource. Tag: 9hehw Code: 0

    The timestamp shown in the error is 2026-08-30 08:32:40 UTC.

    What I have tried

    I have already tried:

    • Updating the OneNote Android app.
    • Clearing the OneNote app cache.
    • Clearing the Chrome cache.
    • Following the suggested troubleshooting steps in an existing Microsoft/community thread, but this did not resolve the problem.

    What I have found

    The important point is that OneNote itself appears to be working correctly.

    If I switch from Recent Pages to Notebook List, I can open a notebook and add a new note. The note syncs successfully, and I can see it on my PC.

    Likewise, if I create or edit notes on my PC, those changes appear correctly in the OneNote Android app.

    So it seems that:

    • My Microsoft account can still sync OneNote data.
    • The notebooks themselves are accessible.
    • Notes can be uploaded from the Android app.
    • Changes made on the PC are downloaded to the Android app.
    • The problem seems specifically related to Recent Pages / the sign-in prompt shown when opening the app.

    Does anyone know what the 9hehw / “Access denied for the resource” error means in OneNote for Android, and what the next troubleshooting step should be?

    It looks as though the underlying OneNote sync is working, but the Recent Pages feature is failing to authenticate or retrieve its data.

    This looks more like the Android sign-in page being blocked than a normal notebook sync error. The correlation ID and timestamp can also help support locate the failed authentication request.

    Here are some suggestions you can try:

    In the Play Store, update Android System WebView, Google Chrome, and Microsoft Authenticator. OneNote uses Android’s web components during sign-in.

    Temporarily disable any VPN, ad blocker, firewall app, or Private DNS setting, then try signing in using mobile data instead of Wi-Fi. OneNote connection errors can occur when access to its authentication or back-end service is blocked.

    Thank you for the clear instructions. Unfortunately, I have tried each of these steps one by one and none of them solved my problem.

    I'm addition to what you suggested, I have:

    • Closed and opened the app
    • Rebooted my device
    • Updated all relevant apps (Google Chrome, Microsoft authenticate, OneNote)
    • Cleared the cache of Google Chrome, Microsoft authenticate, OneNote, and Android System WebView
    • Updated my device to the latest Android OS and rebooted my device.

    In the app, I have the option to sign out to sign back in. Would I lose local changes if I do that, or could I try that option?

    Otherwise, I am ready to escalate. Here are the details I have:
