Why can't I select text in Word anymore by using mouse click and drag? I was able to do this until recently, now it will only partially select text and then immediately unselect it.

To help narrow this down:

  1. Does this happen in every Word document, including a new blank document?
  2. Can you click and drag to select text normally in other apps, such as Notepad or your browser?
  3. Does selecting text with Shift + Arrow keys work correctly in Word?

In the meantime, try opening Word in Safe Mode:

  • Type winword /safe and press Enter.
  • Open a document and test click-and-drag selection again.
