A family of Microsoft products that enable users to capture, organize, and reuse notes electronically.
Try this in order:
- Check internet connectivity on the PC. OneNote sync requires a reliable connection.
- If the notebook is stored on OneDrive, check the Microsoft 365 Service Health page for any outage. If it is stored on SharePoint, contact the administrator.
- Open the notebook in OneNote for the web to confirm whether the issue is on the desktop app or with the notebook/service:
- In the OneNote desktop app, select File.
- On Info, right-click the notebook URL shown under the notebook name, then select Copy.
- Paste that URL into a browser and open it.
- Check whether the latest notes appear in the web version.
- On the PC where the latest edits were made, check sync status:
- Open OneNote desktop.
- Go to File > Info > View Sync Status.
- In Shared Notebook Synchronization, look for any error code or message for that notebook.
- If the notebook opens in the browser but desktop still does not sync, close and reopen the notebook connection.
Warning: before doing this, copy and back up any recent notes that have not synced yet to avoid data loss.
- In OneNote desktop, select File.
- On Info, right-click the notebook URL and select Copy.
- Next to the notebook name, select Settings > Close.
- Paste the copied URL into a browser and open the notebook.
- In OneNote for the web, select Open in Desktop App.
- If only one section or page is failing to sync:
- Go to File > Info > View Sync Status.
- Select the notebook with the yellow warning icon.
- Select Sync Now.
- If one section remains stuck, create a new section in the same notebook.
- Copy the pages from the old section into the new section.
- Press Shift + F9 to sync manually.
- If the sync error is account-related, such as 0xE0000024:
- Select the sync error message at the top of OneNote to refresh the session.
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account that owns the notebook.
- If needed, open the notebook in OneNote for the web, then select Open In OneNote to reconnect it in the desktop app.
Important: signing out of OneNote or reinstalling the app is not recommended as a first step because it can cause data loss if there are unsynced notes.
