For a university account, the effective next step is to contact the school IT admin or help desk and ask them to reset the Microsoft Authenticator/MFA registration for the account so it can be set up again on the device.

Before escalating, check these app issues that commonly block sign-in:

    1. Open Microsoft Authenticator and make sure the app opens normally and the university account is listed.
    2. Make sure notifications are enabled for Authenticator, and that the phone is not in Do Not Disturb or Quiet mode.
    3. Update Microsoft Authenticator from the device app store.
    4. Restart the device.
    5. Check network connectivity. If needed, switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data.
    6. Make sure the device date and time are correct.
    7. If the app is locked, unlock it before trying to approve the sign-in.

If repeated sign-in attempts were made, Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication can temporarily block more attempts. In that case, wait and try again later, or use a different MFA method if one is available.

If the issue still continues, send diagnostic logs from Authenticator before contacting support: open the app, go to the top-level menu, and select Send feedback.

Important: if the admin chooses Require re-register of multi-factor authentication, existing MFA methods are removed and must be set up again at the next sign-in.

    Hello @peter kriaris

To confirm the situation, may I confirm a few points:

    • Could you please confirm which account type you are using for your university: a university-provided account (for example, @edu.xx) or a personal account such as @hotmail.com/@outlook.com?

If you are using a university account, the only way to regain access is to contact your IT administrator or Global Administrator and ask them to update your phone number in the Microsoft Entra admin center

In the Entra admin center, an administrator can set user accounts to require a re-enrollment of multi-factor authentication (MFA). Ask your administrator to follow the steps shown in the following article:

Manage user authentication methods for Microsoft Entra multi-factor authentication

    User's image

    User's image

Require re-enrollment MFA: This disables all previous authentication methods. You'll then be prompted to set up a new MFA authentication method the next time you try to sign in, so you can add a new authenticator app.

    *Note:

    • Please note that in this case, you only need to find the global admin of your organization’s tenant. They are the ones who can help you regain access to your account.
    • The global admin is usually someone in your school’s IT team or a system administrator. They manage Microsoft 365 settings, licenses, and security.
    • Most schools have a helpdesk or IT support email. You can contact them to confirm who the global admin is.

Take care, and have a great week!
