I'm trying to write a new document in WORD but it won't let me. I can't even modify an already existing WORD document. What's going on?

Common causes in this scenario are:

The file is opened from a shared location and another person already has it open in the desktop app. In that case, Word lets the file be viewed but not edited.
The document owner has not allowed editing.
The file has settings that block coauthoring or editing, such as being marked as final, using rights management, encryption, or ActiveX controls.

Try these checks:

If this is Word for the web, select Edit Document > Edit.
If editing is still blocked, go to File > Create a Copy and edit the new copy.
If the file is in a shared location, ask the other person to close it in the desktop version of Office, or use File > Save As to create a separate copy and edit that copy.
If the document was created by someone else, ask the owner to enable editing.
If the problem happens only with one document, check whether it is marked as final or uses restrictions such as Information Rights Management, Digital Rights Management, or encryption.

If the problem is happening even with brand new blank documents, there is a known issue where Word for Microsoft 365 may repeatedly open new blank documents without being prompted in Version 2507 (19029). That issue is fixed in Version 2509 (19231) and newer.
