Since the camera works in Teams, Google Meet, and webcam tests, the hardware and basic driver path are likely working. The issue is likely with the Camera app or an advanced camera feature.
Try these steps in order:
- In Windows, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras.
- Select the built-in camera.
- Open Advanced camera options.
- Enable Basic camera driver mode.
- Restart the Camera app and test again.
This setting can improve reliability when the camera is detected but the image is intermittent or incorrect. It may disable some manufacturer camera enhancements.
Also check whether a privacy feature is affecting the image:
- Look for a physical camera shutter and make sure it is open.
- If the keyboard has a camera privacy key, press it.
- If the PC manufacturer has a camera utility or privacy mode, disable that setting.
Then verify Windows camera permissions:
- Go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
- Make sure Camera access is On.
- Make sure Let apps access your camera is On.
If the problem only happens in the Camera app, run the built-in camera troubleshooter:
- Open the Get Help app and run the automated camera troubleshooter.
If the issue continues on a Surface device, the supported next step is to check updates in the Surface app. Do not uninstall the camera driver on Surface Pro X because that can require a full system reset to restore it.
