Using the New Outlook for Mac for personal email and calendar
For Outlook for Mac, this usually happens when the account type does not support contacts/calendar sync or when local contact storage is the only available option.
Try these checks:
- In Outlook, go to People and Calendar and confirm the correct account or folder is selected.
- If New Contact is grayed out, turn on On My Computer folders:
- Outlook menu > Settings
- Under Quick Settings, select Display
- Under Sidebar, turn on Show On my Computer folders
- Return to People and try creating a contact again.
- If New Contact List is grayed out, the same Show On my Computer folders setting is required.
Important account limitation:
- Gmail, Yahoo, and iCloud accounts support contact storage in Outlook for Mac.
- Other IMAP and POP accounts do not support contact storage or contact synchronization in Outlook for Mac. For those account types, contacts can only be created locally under On My Computer.
- For contact lists, sync from the server is only available for Microsoft 365 and Outlook.com accounts.
If mail is syncing but contacts and calendar are not, verify the account was added as the correct account type. A similar Microsoft Q&A case notes that IMAP and POP sync email only, not contacts or calendars.
