Emails are available, but contacts nor calendar is displayed. Create 'new' is greyed out on both.

It is a new Mac laptop, and I'm on a one month trial.

    Hi

    Thank you for confirming.

Since Contacts and Calendar are not populating and “New” is greyed out, please first update both macOS and Outlook to the latest version. Microsoft recently documented an issue where older Mac/Office versions can enter “reduced functionality mode,” which prevents creating new items:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/lifecycle/officeinstall/update-m365-office-macos-ios

Then restart Outlook and check again.

If it is still blank, please sign in to https://outlook.live.com and check whether your Contacts and Calendar appear there.

If they appear on the web but not on the Mac, remove and re-add the account in Outlook > Settings > Accounts. If they are also missing on the web, they are likely stored under a different account/provider rather than this Outlook account.

If you tell me whether the email address is Outlook/Hotmail, Gmail, iCloud, or another provider, I can narrow down the correct sync method.

    Hi

Since email works but both Contacts and Calendar are empty and “New” is greyed out, the most likely cause is that the account was added as IMAP/POP. Those account types normally sync email only, not contacts or calendars.

Please open Outlook > Settings > Accounts and check the account type.

If it shows IMAP or POP, remove the account and add it again using Outlook > Settings > Accounts > Add Account. If it is Gmail, Yahoo or iCloud, use the provider sign-in instead of setting it up manually as IMAP.

    Microsoft explains this here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/sync-account-in-outlook-for-mac-to-microsoft-cloud

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/add-an-email-account-to-outlook-for-mac

If this is an Outlook.com/Microsoft 365 account rather than IMAP, remove and re-add it, as Contacts and Calendar should normally be available.

The one-month trial itself should not cause Contacts and Calendar to be disabled.

For Outlook for Mac, this usually happens when the account type does not support contacts/calendar sync or when local contact storage is the only available option.

    Try these checks:

    1. In Outlook, go to People and Calendar and confirm the correct account or folder is selected.
    2. If New Contact is grayed out, turn on On My Computer folders:
      • Outlook menu > Settings
      • Under Quick Settings, select Display
      • Under Sidebar, turn on Show On my Computer folders
    3. Return to People and try creating a contact again.
    4. If New Contact List is grayed out, the same Show On my Computer folders setting is required.

    Important account limitation:

    • Gmail, Yahoo, and iCloud accounts support contact storage in Outlook for Mac.
    • Other IMAP and POP accounts do not support contact storage or contact synchronization in Outlook for Mac. For those account types, contacts can only be created locally under On My Computer.
    • For contact lists, sync from the server is only available for Microsoft 365 and Outlook.com accounts.

If mail is syncing but contacts and calendar are not, verify the account was added as the correct account type. A similar Microsoft Q&A case notes that IMAP and POP sync email only, not contacts or calendars.
