I am unable to reliably sync my iCloud Contacts and Calendar with my Classic Outlook 2024 using iCloud for Windows. This issue was being worked as the Question at https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/5934561/synching-between-outlook-2024-and-my-iphone-for-mo but there was no resolution.

For Classic Outlook, the supported path for iCloud Contacts and Calendar sync is through iCloud for Windows, not by adding only iCloud Mail.

Use this setup path:

Install iCloud for Windows.
Open the iCloud app and sign in with the Apple account.
Enable Contacts and Calendars and select Apply.
Open Classic Outlook and verify that the iCloud contacts and calendars appear.

If Outlook prompts to repair iCloud after installation, install iCloud for Windows 5.1 or later, which added support for Outlook 2016 and fixed that repair-loop issue.

If the problem is specifically that Classic Outlook will not accept the iCloud password, and two-factor authentication is enabled on the Apple account, use an app-specific password instead of the normal Apple account password:

Go to the Apple Account website.
Under Sign-In and Security, generate an app-specific password.
In Classic Outlook, go to File > Add Account.
Enter the iCloud email address and use the generated app-specific password when prompted.

Important distinction:

iCloud for Windows syncs contacts and calendars with Classic Outlook.
Adding an iCloud email account to Outlook is separate and is mainly for mail access.

Because the issue described is that sync is not reliable, and the usual repair/reinstall/profile steps were already worked through in a similar case, the remaining supported checks are:

Confirm Automatically sync your iCloud calendars and contacts to Microsoft Outlook is enabled in iCloud for Windows.
Confirm the exact Outlook build in File > Office Account > About Outlook.
Confirm the exact iCloud for Windows version in Settings > Apps > Installed apps > iCloud.
If the problem stops when the Apple Outlook add-in is disabled, that points to a conflict with the iCloud add-in. In that case, after confirming both Outlook and iCloud are current, the issue should be reported to Apple Support, because the affected sync component and add-in are supplied by Apple.

1 -- Identify the one, true, iCloud Contacts Folder

For all that follows, when I say "iCloud Contacts" I mean - Click on the "Folders" icon in the far left bar and pick this iCloud -> Contacts folder.

2 -- Set it to show the total number of Contacts

2A -- Right click on your iCloud Contacts and choose Properties. Then "Show total number of items.

2B -- There should now be a number in square brackets on the iCloud -> Contacts row showing how many iCloud Contacts you have on your PC.

3 -- Compare to your iCloud Contacts count on the web

Open your iCloud Contacts web site. https://www.icloud.com/contacts/
Select All Contacts to get a count.

4 -- What's the count difference between your one, true, iCloud Contacts folder in Outlook and iCloud?

Yes. Those are exactly the numbers I was looking for. They obviously should be the same.

Once you have tracked down the two that are missing from iCloud web, the next step is:

From iCloud Web - Move any contacts in the "Contacts (2)" folder into "Contacts". Remove the "Contacts (2)" folder.

From iCloud PC - Check if the contacts were moved into "Contacts" and that the "Contacts (2)" folder is gone from there as well.

i.e. Did the changes made in iCloud Web sync back to iCloud PC?

The deeper I get into this the worse it gets. I thought I had cleansed up the duplicates only to find that on my phone contacts I have 935 - on my cloud that I view from my PC 676 and in outlook I have 633. When I look back on transcriptions from previous Microsoft suport people i realize they crete a good part of the mess and now cleaning it up is horrible. I did find out in my phone apps that my phone is set to synch 2 accounts Icloud ("icloud drive, contacts, calendar & 6 more") and Gmail : mail, contacts, calendar and Notes.

This might be the reason for the 935 to be 227 duplicates. I can't find a way to export the different contacts into Excel so I can easily find them.. and when I do this one at a time I find that as I view a contact and see which I need to delete there is no easy way for that.

I DO APPRECAITE ALL YOUR HELP.. BUT TILL I HAVE ONE GOOD SET OF CONTACTS I DON"T KNOW WHERE TO GO. I'm VERY upset with the mess microsoft support left me with, and if I was not so tied to this phone and Outlook I'd throw it all out. Unfortunately I can't determine from my backups if there is a better starting point.. This will take me some time..but I am working threw it all. I wish I could just pick one file and go with it but it appears some work contacts would be lost. I did delete all the empty contacts folders created by support. I am assuming all the contacts folders like doctors, Friends, ect are actually from a master contact folder.. is there a way to validate that? Also, None of my categories match anymore.. so I'll ignore that.

From Classic Outlook:

File -> Open & Export -> Import/Export

Export to a file -> Next

Pick a Contacts folder to export

Pick a location and file name for the CSV file and [Finish]

Repeat for any other Contacts top level folders.

The CSV export files can be opened directly in Excel.

Looking at your iCloud Web image

They are not folders. iCloud Contacts doesn't do real folders. They are Contact List.

I'm starting this as a new Answer so we can keep the comments separate from the other conversations going on.

Have you ever tried the New Outlook for Windows App?

I am not a big fan of New Outlook (vs Classic Outlook, what you are using now). But New Outlook has built in support for iCloud Accounts. It will sync your iCloud and Google mail, contacts, and calendar with no add-ins or other special handling.

I am only asking questions. I am not suggesting that you take any action at this point.

Before we go any further:

1 -- Have you ever tried New Outlook for Windows? If so, was there any reason why you could not make it your default email client?

2 -- Do you have any other accounts besides GMail/Google and iCloud/Apple?

I have just gmaIL and icloud.. my other work email is completely seperate and provided by the charity
I work for.

I'm going to try youe export instructions now.. last time I could not get then names into excel.

I'm sorry it took so long to reply- I have been sick and not been able to concentrate on this project. I have given this a lot of thought and TIME.. Using Ecel I did merge both my Iclous and gmail (Outlook) contacts into one spreadsheet, color coded the names so I knew where they orginaated from and tried to see where I stood. This was a horrible experience since I found out more about the files than I care to get in to.

I really want to use Outlook Classic.. I'm really to tied to it. If I import all the contacts into either icloud or Google and get one big list.. then delete as many duplicates as I can.. can we use that?

If I have someoverlap, or miss a few, I'm willing to do this -- then we can delete the other list and import one list so it's in both places.

My larger list is 700 but I can make it smaller by deleting old contacts and some dups.

How are you currently dealing with Contacts in iCloud and Google? Do you have any kind of auto sync between the two? Just keep them in sync manually? Don't try to sync, just have two different Contact sets and you pick which set you need to pull from based on what you are doing?

Great synching question.. I did have synching between everything at one point.. Then when I lost it, (and got very sick and couldn't worry about it) I just entered new entries everywhere Outlook, Iphone, and Icloud. I think this is where I got messed up. Maybe I lost my patience, doing it and when the Microsoft Support Team had me use "Quick Assist" I was a little tooooo trusting. I do have some conversations saved from all the support calls, but I feel one person messed up after another and more than a few times, they just hung up.

At the present time I have no synching of contacts anywhere, anymore. IF I need to add or edit a contact I do it in three places. At this very moment I have 678 Contacts in Cloud – 633 in Outlook Classic and 801 on my phone – I know there are 61 dups on phone according to My Card. (Was afraid to allow phone to merge. but am willing to do so and lose whatever???)

I’m willing to delete/lose all the subfolders in contacts such as Doctors-Family-Friends- Old work contact – and more.. because I feel they are in my “All contacts” somewhere?

· When I’m using the phone I search for a number/contact by name –

· When I’m in Outlook I use the addess book unless the name comes up automatically when I start typing.

Same issues with Calendar..

I have noticed my mail is synching fine. IF I delete an email on my phone it deletes it in Outlook and moves it to unread at the server—as it always did.

Yes. Because your iCloud email is not synced by iCloud for Windows (which does Contacts and Calendar). It is handled separately as just a plain IMAP email account in Classic. Like your GMail.

The difference between the iCloud Contacts and the Outlook Contacts we know about. That's because your iCloud for Windows is not working, so iCloud/Outlook are out of sync.

But I don't understand the phone count mismatch.

1 -- What kind of phone? e.g. Android, Apple.

2 -- What email/contact app are you using on the phone? e.g. Apple Mail, Outlook, GMail

I think -I'm using default Apple Contacts App

and apple mail app. Images attached. Also I'm running Ver. IOS 26.6.2
