I have protected a sheet and included SORT in the allowed processes but still get a disallowed message

I have password protected a sheet and specified that SORT is allowed and got a "disallowed" message because it was a protected sheet and that I would have to unprotected to run the sort. Within the area of the sort were some protected cells so I moved these out of the Sort Area and ran again but still got the same message. Given as already said that SORT was allowed in the protection set up I do not know of any other way. I would like to protect the sheet from any another user accidentally wiping out a formula but they would not be able to use the SORT function. Seems strange that SORT is within the parameters set for protection but does not seem to allow it to be used? Any suggestions/clarifications please. Thank you

Hi Ian Bewick,

The Sort option in Protect Sheet only allows sorting when Excel can safely reorder all cells involved in the sort. If any cell within the sort range is still locked, part of a protected structure, or otherwise restricted, Excel may continue to display the "cannot sort because the sheet is protected" message even though Sort is enabled.

A few things to check:

  • Ensure all cells in the sort range, including headers and any hidden rows/columns, are unlocked.
  • Check whether the data is formatted as an Excel Table, as protection can sometimes affect table sorting differently.
  • Verify there are no merged cells within the sort area.
  • If formulas are present, confirm that any cells participating in the sort are not locked.
  • Since you're using Excel for Mac, it may also be worth testing the workbook in Excel for Windows or Excel on the web to determine whether the behavior is platform-specific.

As a quick diagnostic test, try creating a small sample range with all cells unlocked, protect the sheet with Sort enabled, and then perform a sort. If that works, the issue is likely related to a specific cell, table setting, or protection attribute in the original range rather than the Sort permission itself.

Please let us know whether the data is in a normal range or an Excel Table, and whether all cells in the sort range are unlocked, as that will help narrow down the cause.
