Contact Lists

Hi, my firm currently use Microsoft Dynamics CRM. When using this we have Account Lists as a way of grouping different Accounts together for different marketing and communication purposes. I have a specific marketing targeting list which I have set up based on the target firms as an Account List. However, I actually have a more specific list of individual people who I want to target and see the activity related to those specific people, rather than the overarching activity of the whole organisation (or Account) that they belong to. Is there such thing as Individual Contact Lists?

Thanks!

Dear @Casey A Buddin.

Based on your description, yes, if you're using Microsoft Dynamics CRM / Dynamics 365, you can create a Marketing List targeted at Contacts rather than Accounts.

When creating a Marketing List, the Targeted At field allows you to choose the record type for the list, such as Accounts, Contacts, or Leads. Once a list is created, all members must be of the same record type

For detailed information:

List (marketing list) table

For your scenario, a Contact Marketing List would be the recommended approach because it allows you to:

  • Group specific individuals across one or more organizations.
  • Run marketing campaigns and communications against those contacts directly.
  • Track engagement and activities at the contact level rather than only at the parent account level.
  • Maintain either:
    • Static Lists (manually managed), or
    • Dynamic Lists (automatically populated based on criteria)

If your organization is using Dynamics 365 Customer Insights - Journeys (formerly Dynamics 365 Marketing), the equivalent functionality may be implemented through Segments and Customer Journeys rather than classic Marketing Lists.

You can refer to this article How to Set Up Dynamic Marketing Lists in Microsoft Dynamics 365/CRM

I hope it meets your expectations, feel free to reach out if you have any other questions.

Yes. In Dynamics 365, marketing lists can target a single record type, including contacts as individual people, not just accounts as organizations.

    Key points:

    • A marketing list can include only one type of customer record at a time, such as accounts, contacts, or leads.
    • When creating the list, use the Targeted at field to choose Contact if the goal is to work with individual people.
    • That field can’t be changed after the record is saved, so a list created for Accounts would need a separate Contact-based list for person-level targeting.
    • Both static and dynamic marketing lists are available:
      • Static: members are added and maintained manually.
      • Dynamic: members are returned based on criteria and refresh when the list is opened or used in campaigns.

If the requirement is to track activity for specific people rather than the parent organization, the correct approach is to create a Contact marketing list instead of an Account marketing list.
