Microsoft Purview portal not working as expected

I’m currently using the one‑month free trial of Office 365 E5 for the LAB practice for Microsoft Purview, but several Microsoft Purview features are not functioning despite having both Global Administrator and Compliance Administrator roles assigned. The Device Onboarding section remains completely greyed out, and Insider Risk Management (IRM) section refuses to activate, prompting me to purchase an Office 365 E3 license even though E5 should already include IRM capabilities. I’m looking for guidance on why these limitations occur in an E5 trial environment and what steps are required to fully enable Purview functionality.

    Hi @Anwesha Chakladar ,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

This is likely related to trial tenant limitations or incomplete provisioning, not the Global Administrator or Compliance Administrator roles.

    Key points to check:

    • Ensure your user account has an E5 Compliance / Microsoft Purview trial license assigned.
    • Insider Risk Management (IRM) requires additional setup and licensing validation before it can be activated.
    • The Device Onboarding section depends on Microsoft Defender for Endpoint. If Defender isn't configured or no devices are onboarded, the option may remain greyed out.
    • Purview trial features can take time to provision after activation. Microsoft notes that some services may take up to a few hours to appear.

    Recommendation:

    1. Verify E5/Purview trial license assignment.
    2. Confirm Microsoft Defender for Endpoint is enabled.
    3. Enable audit logging.
    4. Wait for trial provisioning to complete and sign out/sign back in.
    5. If the issue persists, open a Microsoft support ticket with screenshots of the licensing and Purview pages.

Based on the symptoms, the issue appears to be licensing/provisioning related rather than a permissions problem
