Issue with excel

My excel will not let me type in the cells and the fx is a light gray not allowing me to type in the text bar either. The sheet is not protected so that is not the issue.

If the sheet is not protected, I’d first check whether the issue is with that specific workbook or Excel itself.

To help narrow down the issue:

If you open Excel and create a completely new blank workbook, can you type in the cells there?

Do you see any message or banner at the top such as “Protected View,” “Read Only,” or “Enable Editing”?

In Excel, go to File > Account. Does it show Microsoft 365 as activated, or does it say “Unlicensed Product” or “Activation Required”?

Also, when you click a cell and start typing, does absolutely nothing happen, or do you receive an error message?

If the sheet is not protected, the most likely next checks are workbook protection and keyboard/input state.

Check whether the workbook structure is protected.
- Go to Review.
- If Unprotect Workbook appears, select it.
- Or go to File > Info > Protect Workbook and turn off Protect workbook structure.
- When workbook structure is protected, Excel disables actions such as adding, deleting, moving, copying, renaming, hiding, and unhiding sheets.
Check whether Scroll Lock is on.
- Press Win + Ctrl + O to open the On-Screen Keyboard.
- If ScrLk is enabled, turn it off.
Test direct cell edit mode.
- Double-click a cell or press F2 after selecting a cell.
- Then try typing.
Test whether the issue happens in a new workbook.
- If typing also fails in a new blank workbook, the problem is likely with Excel input behavior rather than that specific file.
If the formula bar remains unavailable and typing still does not work, repair Office.
- Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Find Microsoft Office, right-click it, and choose Change.
- Run Quick Repair first.
- If that does not help, run Online Repair.

If the problem is only in one workbook, protection is still the most likely cause. If it happens in every workbook, focus on Scroll Lock, edit mode, and Office repair.
