To restore Windows to an earlier date, use System Restore or Point-in-time restore.
If Windows still opens:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type rstrui.exe and press Enter.
- In Restore system files and settings, select Next.
- Select the restore point from before the problem started. If needed, select Show more restore points.
- Optionally select Scan for affected programs.
- Select Next > Finish.
- Windows restarts automatically after the restore is applied.
If Windows does not start normally:
- Enter the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).
- Select Troubleshoot > Point-in-time restore.
- If prompted, enter the BitLocker recovery key.
- Select a restore point.
- Review the information and select Continue.
- Confirm the restore point and select Restore.
- After the restore finishes, the PC restarts and starts Windows.
Important:
- A restore can revert apps, settings, passwords, certificates, and keys to the selected restore point.
- Changes made after that restore point can be lost.
- Files stored in cloud services such as OneDrive aren’t affected.
- Do not power off the PC during the restore. This can leave the PC unusable.
- After restoring, check for and install the latest Windows updates.
