How to fix error 0x0000142 in Windows 11

An app that has worked OK for many years now gets error 0x0000142 even though Smart App Control is turned off. The app in question is Sailwave ver 2.38.2-1 downloaded direct from www.sailwave.com

Hello, can you clarify in more details.

0x0000142 occurs due to many reasons, even after disabling Smart App control, after starting the installation of app, does microsoft security notification pop up?

If so then other security feature is deleting the .dll file of the software such as virus protection or exploit protection or other protection software you may have installed.

If not then, you can try to restart the pc and then, press windows+R and type %temp% and enter, and delete all the files, then try installing it. if even after that it doesn't work, can you provide the screenshot.

Yes all the exe files in Sailwave do run except Sailwave.exe,

Is there some reason that you mention the Smart App Control and tagged this as a security question?

I was able to install that app on both Win 10 and 11. And I enabled Smart App Control and it still worked.

Have you applied all of the outstanding Windows Updates?

Were you doing something that might have deleted or updated files in C:\Program Files (x86)\Sailwave?

Did you install some other software recently?

Your easiest resolution might be to reinstall the software. First back up all of your data files to some backup folder. Then uninstall the app. Reboot. Then reinstall.

Please note that I do not have any experience with that program.

Hi MotoX80,

At some point I saw an error which said Smart App Control had stopped Sailwave from running due to not being certified.

I have now uninstalled Sailwave but it is still in the list of installed apps even though C:/Program Files (x86)/Sailwave is no longer.

It might be that Smart App is flagging the installer and not the app itself. I noticed that it used the old Wise installer. I turned Smart App on after I installed Sailwave.

If you've uninstalled Sailwave, go ahead and reboot to get a clean start. Turn Smart App off and then run the install again. See if that fixes your problem.

When did it stop working? Did you install some other program in between now and when it worked last?

It runs on my test VM so to me that indicates that there is nothing inherently wrong with base Windows. Something had to have happened on your pc to corrupt some DLL that the program references.

I see that there are several exe's included with Sailwave. Do any of those programs run or do they all get the 142 error?

Let's start with some basics. Open a command prompt with "Run as administrator" and run these commands.

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth 
sfc /scannow

What about Windows Update? Have you installed all of the available updates?
