Hi,

I’m having a serious problem with my Windows Insider installation.

My current Windows version is:

Windows 11 26H2
OS Build 26300.8935
Device is enrolled in the Windows Insider Program

Windows is now showing messages that the current build has expired.

The main problem is that I cannot get out of this situation:

Windows Update repeatedly fails when trying to install a newer build.
I tried leaving the Windows Insider Program and returning to a stable version, but this has not solved the problem.
I would actually be happy to remain in the Insider Program, as long as I can move to a supported/stable Insider build that does not show the expiration warning.
I have also tried to reset the PC, but Reset this PC does not work either, so I cannot perform a clean reset from Windows.
At the moment I seem to be stuck on the expired build with no working way to update, roll back, or reset the installation.

I would like to know what the recommended recovery procedure is in this situation.

What I need help with:

Is there a way to manually upgrade from build 26300.8935 to a current supported Insider build?
Can I switch from this expired build to a stable Windows 11 release without completely reinstalling Windows?
If a clean installation is required, what is the recommended method for preserving my files/apps if possible?
Is there an official ISO or recovery procedure specifically for Insider builds in this situation?

I would really appreciate help from someone familiar with Windows Insider builds, because Windows Update, rollback and Reset this PC are all currently unavailable to me.

For an expired Windows Insider build, the documented recovery paths are:

Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for Updates to try to get the latest build available in the current channel.
If updates are not offered or continue failing, move off the expiring build by using one of these supported options:
- Switch to the Dev Channel: go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Insider Program, set the device to Dev Channel, then return to Windows Update and check for updates again.
- Reinstall Windows with a Windows Insider Beta Channel ISO.
- Start fresh with a clean installation of Windows 10.

For build 26300.8935 specifically, the release notes state that this build is in the Experimental channel and that updates are based on Windows 11, version 26H2.

About leaving Insider and returning to a stable release without reinstalling: the available guidance only confirms that for Beta, Experimental, or Release Preview devices, Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program > Stop Insider Preview Builds can be used to stop getting preview builds and put the device back into a retail build. If that path does not work and the device is stuck on an expired build, the documented fallback is a clean installation.

Because Reset this PC is already failing, the documented clean-install path is to use installation media or an Insider ISO instead of relying on Reset. Also note that one Insider build notes a known issue where Reset this PC may get stuck; when using Reset, the recommended workaround is cloud download instead of local. Since Reset is not working in this case, ISO-based reinstall is the more direct recovery path.

If the goal is to stay on Insider:

Back up all files and applications first.
Download the latest Beta Channel ISO from the Windows Insider ISO page.
In File Explorer, open the ISO so Windows mounts it.
Run Setup.exe.
During setup, select Change what to keep and then choose Nothing to complete a clean install.
After installation, go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Insider Program and set the device back up for Insider Preview builds in the Beta Channel.

Important: the documented Insider ISO process above is a clean install and will erase files, settings, and applications. The provided guidance does not describe an in-place repair or upgrade path that preserves apps and files for this expired-build scenario.

If the goal is to leave Insider:

Try Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program > Stop Insider Preview Builds.
If that does not recover the device, use installation media for a clean Windows installation.

If updates still are not received before reinstalling, the troubleshooting guidance also says to verify diagnostic data settings and, if needed, consider a clean install.
