Try these in order:
- Restart Windows Explorer.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Find Windows Explorer in the process list.
- Select it, then choose Restart.
- The taskbar may disappear briefly and then return.
- If the taskbar is still missing, check display projection.
- Press Windows + P.
- Select PC screen only.
- This can bring the taskbar back if Windows is trying to show it on another display.
- If Start still does not open, repair Windows system files.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth sfc /scannow - Wait for each command to finish, then restart the PC.
- If the issue started after an update or crash, use Windows Recovery Environment.
- At the sign-in screen, hold Shift and select Power > Restart.
- Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Uninstall Updates.
- Remove the latest quality update.
- If that does not help, go to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > System Restore and choose a restore point from before the problem started.
- If the Start menu is unresponsive, verify the required service.
- Open Services and make sure Background Tasks Infrastructure Service (BrokerInfrastructure) is set to Automatic.
If none of these steps work, the Windows shell may be damaged beyond a simple restart and recovery options are the supported next step.
