Dell L521X will not turn on, only shows orange light

Hey all,

I own a 14-year-old Dell L521X laptop. I recently re-installed Windows 7 Professional (its original OS) on it because it was performing terribly on Windows 10. It was working fine until recently - when I had it plugged it in it stayed on for a few minutes and then turned off and wouldn't come back on. If I power drained it (i.e. unplugged it then held the power button for a few seconds before plugging it back in) it would come on, just turn back off after a few minutes of being plugged in. That happened a few times, until now when it's plugged in the orange light comes on on the front of the keyboard (to indicate it's charging). When I try to turn it on, though, the keyboard lights up (screen does not come on), but after a few more seconds the keyboard light turns back off.

Any help please?

    This looks like a hardware power or POST failure rather than a Windows 7 problem. The laptop turns off before reaching the Dell logo, so Windows has not started loading.

    Here are some suggestions you can try:

    Disconnect the charger and all USB devices. Hold the power button for 30 seconds, then connect only the charger and try starting it again.

    Check whether the light on the charger stays on when connected to the laptop. If it goes out, the charging port or motherboard may have an electrical fault.

    If you are comfortable opening the laptop, disconnect the internal battery, reseat the memory modules, and test it using only the charger. The Dell XPS 15 L521X Owner’s Manual provides the correct removal steps.

    If it starts without the battery, the battery likely needs replacement. If it still briefly lights the keyboard and shuts down, it is recommended that a repair shop test the charger, DC-in port, memory, and motherboard. This same L521X behavior has been associated with battery or motherboard failure.

    Given the laptop’s age, compare the repair estimate with the cost of replacing it.
