File History problems after installing KB5101684 and KB5120249

Hello,I would like to know if other Windows 10/11 users have noticed similar File History issues after recent updates.

I have observed the problem on two different PCs:

Windows 11 25H2 + KB5101684 (July 29, 2026)

Windows 10 22H2 + KB5120249 (August 12, 2026)

On both systems, files are still being backed up to the D: drive, but File History does not correctly update the Last backup status, and Previous Versions does not show the newly backed-up versions.

A temporary workaround is to go to:

Control Panel → File History → Select drive → select the D: drive again

File History then starts working normally again.

Because the same behavior appeared on two systems after different updates, I wonder whether this could be related to a recent File History change or regression in Windows.

I have already reported the issue through the Feedback Hub, but have not received a response.

If anyone else has observed the same behavior, please share your experience below. I would also appreciate it if Microsoft could investigate whether these two updates are related to the issue.

Yes, based on what I can find, your regression theory is technically plausible, but I cannot find solid information to confirm widespread Windows bug.

The strongest evidence is that both KBs contain a File History change. Microsoft says each update fixes File History automatic backups to SMB network shares that could fail with a false "invalid credentials" error. The fact that the files are still being backed up, but "Last backup" and Previous Versions are not updating until you reselect the same drive, also points more toward a File History catalog/state issue. You have also made a number of system-level changes in the past, including changes to system folders and the registry. Those kinds of modifications can affect File History behavior and make troubleshooting more complicated, so they are another variable that cannot be ruled out.

I understand you may not have made any changes immediately before this File History issue appeared. However, I was referring to changes documented in your previous post history.

For example, you previously described modifying User Shell Folders in the registry, manually recreating or renaming Windows special folders, reversing OneDrive folder redirection, and, on the Windows 10 PC accidentally changing the user profile folder into a Pictures folder.

Those are system-folder and registry changes, and some of them directly involve the Known Folders that File History uses. They may not be the cause of this particular problem, but they are variables that cannot simply be excluded when trying to determine whether the Windows updates are responsible.

So I would not say the updates definitely caused this unless the same behavior can also be reproduced on a system with a standard, unmodified folder configuration.

In response to your questions, and to clarify some issues, I'd like to explain the details of the previous system changes. In June 2025 and 2026, I made some changes to the user's Shell folder, Music/Video folder, and OneDrive folder redirection. These changes did not affect the file history function at the time. The file history function worked perfectly, including backup time updates.

After updating KB5094126, my favorite folders in the user section inexplicably changed to English. This is a problem caused by the update, not my fault.These three posts are from my own experience, but my archive history was completely unaffected, and backup times were synchronized. The problem only appeared after the July 29th update. My desktop computer remained untouched; the problem only appeared after the August 13th update.Other users have also encountered the same situation as me.
