Hi,

I am the owner of a small UK business and am trying to regain administrative control of our Microsoft 365 tenant.

Our Microsoft 365 environment was originally set up by a third-party IT provider several years ago. The relationship with that provider has now ended, and it appears that the Global Administrator account is no longer under our control.

I can still successfully sign in using my business account and I have a valid Microsoft 365 Business Standard licence assigned to me. However, I have no administrative roles assigned and receive the following message when attempting to access the Microsoft 365 Admin Center:

"Your account doesn't have permission to view or manage this page in the Microsoft 365 Admin center."

I can provide evidence that:

  • I am a licensed user within the tenant.
  • My company is the Microsoft 365 subscription holder.
  • I control the DNS for the company's domain.
  • The domain is actively configured for Microsoft 365 services.

The difficulty I am encountering is that all Microsoft support routes appear to direct me to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, which I cannot access because I am not an administrator.

Could a Microsoft moderator or support engineer please advise:

  1. The correct process for recovering Global Administrator access when the previous administrator is no longer available.
  2. How to contact the appropriate Microsoft team when I cannot create a support ticket through the Admin Center.
  3. What evidence Microsoft typically requires to verify ownership of a tenant in this situation.

Thank you for any guidance.

    Hello @Emma Watts,

Thank you for the detailed explanation of your situation.

Since the Microsoft 365 environment was originally set up and managed by a third-party IT provider, I would first recommend attempting to contact that provider and asking them to transfer the necessary administrative roles and permissions back to your organization. If they still have access to the tenant, this is typically the quickest and simplest way to regain administrative control.

If the provider is no longer available, is unresponsive, or no longer has access to the tenant, the next step would be to contact Microsoft Business Support directly by phone.

Please try to find the related hotline number to call the frontline and let them raise a ticket for you: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support

Depending on your country or region:

For some countries, when calling the support number, although there are about 30 seconds opening as something "you can visit the link...." But you can ignore this opening and wait until the option, then "1" as a business email user, "1" again for technical help.

For some countries, it will be an automated conversation like:

    • First, when you call the hotline, it asks what kind of problem you are worried about.
    • Answered: admin access.
    • A: What kind of product are you using?
    • B: Microsoft 365 for business.
    • A confirmation: education or company account?
    • B: For business
    • A: Are you an administrator?
    • B: Yes.
    • A: Do you have the other admin in your organization?
    • B: No.
    • A: You need one.... Service request?
    • B: Yes

    Note:

    • You may need to call multiple times before you are connected to a live support representative and can successfully create a support request with a ticket number for tracking.

Explain to the Support Team that you are unable to access the Microsoft 365 Admin Center because no current user within your organization has Global Administrator permissions. Request assistance with tenant ownership verification and administrator access recovery, and provide details of the partner or reseller from whom the Microsoft 365 subscription was purchased, including the steps you have already taken to contact them and why they are currently unable to assist with restoring administrative access.

The support team can review your situation and advise whether there are any recovery options available for your tenant after completing their verification process.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any questions or if there's anything else I can assist with.
