How do I fix incoming emails being rejected?

Recently my outlook account online live.com has been rejecting random emails, especially, but not exclusively, verification emails. I have been notified by several businesses that my paperless billing status has been revoked because Outlook rejected their emails. I have had verification emails for new accounts never arrive. This has been going on for about two weeks now. I would appreciate any help.

For Outlook.com/live.com, incoming mail can be rejected for two different reasons, and the fix depends on which one is happening.

    1. Check the common mailbox causes first:
      • Make sure Microsoft cloud storage and mailbox storage are not full. If cloud storage is full, Outlook.com cannot send or receive email, and messages sent while storage was full are bounced back to the sender and are unrecoverable.
      • In Outlook.com, check Junk Email settings and the Junk Email folder.
      • Check whether email forwarding is enabled.
      • Check whether any inbox rules are moving or hiding messages.
      • Check the Other tab and any filters or sort settings that could make messages appear missing.
    2. If senders are getting a rejection or bounce message, the problem is often on the sender side, not in the mailbox:
      • If the sender’s domain fails SPF, DKIM, or DMARC checks, Outlook.com can reject the message before it reaches the inbox.
      • Adding the sender to Safe Senders usually does not fix this, because the rejection happens during the first-pass server check.
      • This especially affects verification and business emails sent from domains or providers with incorrect authentication setup.
      • The sender or their mail provider needs to review and fix their email authentication configuration.
    3. Ask affected senders to share the exact bounce message:
      • If they see errors such as 550 5.7.515, that indicates the sending domain did not meet Microsoft’s required authentication level.
      • If they see SPF-related failures or block-list/IP reputation errors, those also must be fixed by the sender’s provider.
    4. If the issue is specifically with Microsoft account verification codes:
      • Verification messages might not arrive if the account has been flagged for unusual activity or locked for security reasons.
      • If prompted to verify the Outlook.com account when sending, complete the account verification flow.
      • If a verification code is being sent to another Microsoft-based address, use separate privacy/InPrivate browser windows so both accounts can stay signed in while retrieving the code.
    5. If Outlook.com on the web is behaving inconsistently:
      • Try Microsoft Edge or another browser.
      • Disable or exclude Outlook.com from ad blockers such as AdBlock or uBlock, because they can prevent Outlook.com from loading correctly.

If the missing messages are being actively rejected and senders are receiving NDRs, the most likely fix is for each sender’s mail provider to correct SPF/DKIM/DMARC or resolve IP reputation issues. That part cannot be fixed from the Outlook.com mailbox side.

So say we all. Just a sample of recent similar reports:

Microsoft doesn't seem to have any solution that works for most people. Sorry, I know that's not the answer you wanted to hear.
