Phone Link "Something went wrong" pairing loop after MS account password reset + sign-out-everywhere (Android, K50)

Hi,

Hoping someone's hit this exact sequence before. Timeline of what happened and what I've tried:

Setup: Windows 11 25H2, Phone Link on PC, Bold K50 (Android) with Link to Windows app.

Initial symptom: Phone Link showed the K50 as "Offline" with grayed-out Bluetooth/Wi-Fi/battery icons. Clicking the status revealed: "Your Microsoft Account needs attention. You may need to update your password to reconnect."

Steps taken so far, in order:

  1. Confirmed via account.microsoft.com that a password update was genuinely needed — updated it there.
  2. Went looking for a sign-out option inside Phone Link itself to force it to pick up the new credential — there isn't one; Phone Link inherits whatever account Windows itself is signed into, and I sign into Windows via PIN, not password, so a normal lock/unlock never touched the actual password.
  3. Removing the PIN to force a password-based Windows sign-in seemed like overkill, so instead I used the Microsoft account's "Sign out of everywhere" option to invalidate all cached tokens at once. MS account flagged this may take up to 24 hours to fully propagate across their services.
  4. While re-authenticating on my phone with the new password, MS auto-generated a new Passkey — verified it in Security dashboard → "Manage how I sign in," confirmed device/timestamp matched, left it in place.
  5. Removed Link to Windows from the phone entirely and tried a clean reinstall/re-pair via QR code. Getting "Something went wrong" on every attempt — tried 3x, tried both Wi-Fi and mobile data during pairing, same result each time.

Current theory: This is the 24-hour token propagation window MS warned about, not a local Bluetooth/Wi-Fi/permissions issue, since I've ruled those out individually.

Question: Has anyone actually hit this specific combo (MS password reset → sign-out-everywhere → Phone Link re-pair failure) and can confirm whether it's really just a wait-it-out situation, or if there's a cache/token somewhere on the Windows side that needs manual clearing to unstick it sooner? Open to Phone Link diagnostic logs / advanced reset options if that'd help someone help me.

Thanks so much for any help and guidance.

Richard

Things seems to be functioning well enough but every morning when I boot up the computer and Phone Link starts up it asks me to scan a code for the WiFi, that's annoying. Was never an issue before. Please fix this. Thanks~!

The supported next steps are to fully unlink and re-pair, then reset the app if the loop continues.

    1. On the Android device, make sure Link to Windows is updated to the latest version.
    2. In Link to Windows on the phone, select the Microsoft account name under Linked Account.
    3. Go to Account Settings > Sign out and unlink account > confirm Unlink.
    4. On the PC, open Phone Link > Settings > Devices > Add new device and complete pairing again.
    5. If reconnecting still fails, restart Phone Link on the PC.

Because the error shown is "Something went wrong", the documented causes are usually that the PC and Android device lost connection. Check these specifically:

    • Unlock the PC, then retry.
    • Verify Wi-Fi is working.
    • Keep the Android device close to the router.
    • Make sure the Android device is not in airplane mode.

    Also verify these connection prerequisites:

    • The same Microsoft account is signed in on both Phone Link and Link to Windows.
    • Battery saver is off on both PC and Android.
    • On Android, disable battery optimization for Link to Windows:
      • Settings > Apps & notifications > App info > Link to Windows > Advanced > Battery > Manage Battery Usage > Battery optimization > select Link to Windows > Don't optimize
      • On some devices: Settings > Apps > Link to Windows > Battery > Optimize battery usage > choose All > Link to Windows > toggle Off
    • On the PC, allow Phone Link to run in the background:
      • Start > Settings > Privacy > Background apps > ensure Phone Link is enabled.
    • On the PC, check shared experiences:
      • Start > Settings > System > Shared experiences > if Fix now appears under Accounts, complete it.
    • On Android, ensure notifications for Link to Windows are enabled.
    • Turn Do not disturb off on the Android device.

If the pairing loop still continues, the documented escalation is to reset the app or unlink the Android device and set it up again. A similar accepted resolution for Phone Link repeatedly failing to open was:

    • Settings > System > System Components > Phone Link > 3 dots > Repair
    • If repair does not help, use Reset

The provided material does not confirm a required 24-hour Microsoft account token propagation wait for Phone Link, and it does not document any manual Windows-side token/cache clearing beyond unlinking, repairing, resetting, and pairing again.
