Using New Outlook on Windows for professional communication and productivity
This can happen when Outlook is opening the window, but Windows is not bringing it to the foreground, or when Outlook is configured to minimize to the notification area instead of behaving normally on the taskbar.
Try these checks in order:
- Check whether Outlook is set to hide when minimized
- Look in the notification area at the far right of the taskbar.
- Right-click the Outlook icon there.
- If Hide When Minimized is checked, select it to clear it.
- Test by minimizing and restoring Outlook
- With Outlook running, click the main Outlook window on the taskbar.
- Minimize it, then restore it again.
- Try New Email again.
- Check Windows taskbar flashing behavior
- Right-click the taskbar and select Taskbar settings.
- Expand Taskbar behaviors.
- Make sure Show flashing on taskbar apps is enabled.
- If the problem started after a recent Windows 11 update
There is a documented Windows 11 24H2 issue where Outlook notification-related windows can open behind other active applications instead of in front. In that case, the Outlook icon flashes on the taskbar, but the window is behind another app. The documented fix is in newer Windows updates:
- Build 26100.5074
- Also noted as fixed in KB5062660 (OS Build 26100.4770) Preview
- If using multiple monitors Windows taskbar popups can behave differently depending on display configuration. Go to Settings > System > Display and check whether the display is set to Extend these displays or Duplicate these displays. In Windows 11, some taskbar UI elements appear only on the primary monitor by design.
If the Outlook window is still only showing as a taskbar button and never becomes visible, the most likely supported cause in the available guidance is that the window is opening behind another active application or Outlook is using Hide When Minimized.
