A family of Microsoft operating systems that run across personal computers, tablets, laptops, phones, internet of things devices, self-contained mixed reality headsets, large collaboration screens, and other devices.
That prompt is asking for the current Windows password for the local account on the device, not the Microsoft account password.
In this scenario, the lock screen can still accept the Microsoft account password for sign-in, but the “Sign into this computer using your Microsoft account” window is validating the existing local Windows password before it converts the account.
Try these steps:
- In the password box, enter the old local account password that was used for this PC before switching.
- If no local password was ever created, try leaving the password field blank and select Next.
- If already signed in, go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Password and check whether a Windows password is set for the local account. If needed, create or change the local Windows password there, then try the Microsoft account sign-in process again.
- If sign-in problems continue, from the Windows sign-in screen use I forgot my password or I forgot my PIN if those options appear.
- If the Microsoft account itself has sign-in issues or too many failed attempts were made, use the Sign-in helper to check the account state.
If the password was recently reset and the account conversion still fails, complete the Microsoft account password reset flow again if needed, then use the verification code to set a new password and retry.
Microsoft support can route technical support, but support agents cannot send password reset links or access and change account details.
