Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
This usually means the desktop apps are trying to use a work or school identity path instead of the Microsoft account that owns the Microsoft 365 Personal subscription.
Use this sequence:
- Verify the subscription is attached to the correct personal Microsoft account.
- Sign in to Services & subscriptions at
https://account.microsoft.com/services. - Confirm the Microsoft 365 Personal subscription is listed there.
- If it is not listed, that email address is not the account that owns the license.
- Sign in to Services & subscriptions at
- Sign in to Microsoft 365 with the correct account.
- Go to www.microsoft365.com and select Sign In.
- Use the personal Microsoft account associated with the subscription, not a work or school account.
- From there, use the install option to install or reinstall the apps.
- Remove any work or school account connection from Windows.
- Open Settings > Accounts > Access work or school.
- If an organization account is listed, select it and Disconnect it.
- This is especially relevant when the device was previously signed in to Office with a work account.
- Remove old Office sign-in remnants.
- Open Control Panel > Credential Manager > Windows Credentials.
- Delete credentials related to the old organization account.
- Then restart Windows.
- Check for multiple Office installations.
- Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Search for office.
- If more than one Office version is installed, uninstall the version not being used.
- Restart the PC after uninstalling.
- Reinstall from the subscription account.
- After restart, sign back in at www.microsoft365.com.
- Install the desktop apps from that account.
- Then open an Office app and sign in with the same personal Microsoft account.
- If activation still fails, try a clean Windows profile.
- A Microsoft Q&A accepted answer recommends testing activation from a new local administrator profile when an old work/school identity is still affecting Office.
Important points:
- Personal Microsoft accounts and Microsoft 365 work or school accounts cannot be merged.
- Microsoft 365 apps do not support being signed in to multiple user accounts from the same organization or tenant at the same time; sign out from one before signing in with another.
- If Office says Unlicensed Product, the documented first checks are: sign in with the account used to buy Office, remove extra Office installs, and verify subscription status.
- If the apps are not already installed and there is no install option after signing in with a work or school account, that is an admin-managed organization scenario, not a Microsoft 365 Personal scenario.
If the subscription is visible on account.microsoft.com/services and the problem continues after removing the work account connection, clearing credentials, uninstalling extra Office copies, and reinstalling from the subscription account, use the Microsoft sign-in helper or Contact Support path.
