Sending, receiving, and organizing email in Outlook.com
Hi @Antonio Condurro ,
I completely understand why seeing a sudden, massive spike in junk mail can be alarming! It is totally normal to feel anxious when your spam folder is suddenly flooded.
First, take a deep breath: the good news is that if these emails are landing directly in your Junk Email folder, Outlook's filtering system is doing exactly what it is supposed to do—protecting your main inbox. A sudden increase usually just means your email address was recently picked up by a new spam list or data broker.
Here is how you can manage this safely and ease your concerns:
- Do Not Interact with the Junk
Do not open them: Sometimes simply opening a spam email can load an invisible tracking pixel, which confirms to the spammer that your email address is active.
Do not click "Unsubscribe": Clicking links in legitimate emails is fine, but clicking "unsubscribe" on a malicious spam email often validates your address to the bad actors, leading to even more spam.
- Lock Down Your Account Security
Even though the spam filter is catching the emails, this is a great reminder to make sure your account is fully secure.
Check your sign-in activity: Go to your Microsoft account security dashboard and check the "Recent activity" page to ensure there are no successful logins from places you do not recognize.
Enable Two-Step Verification: If you haven't already, turn on Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for peace of mind.
- Let the System Work
Block persistent senders: If you notice the exact same address slipping through, you can right-click the email and select Block > Block Sender.
Ignore and empty: You can safely ignore the folder. Outlook automatically deletes items in the Junk Email folder after 10 days, but you can also right-click the folder and select "Empty Folder" to clear out the clutter immediately.
Have you had a chance to check your recent sign-in activity to ensure everything looks normal?
