VIDEOS ISSUE: Why can't I insert videos from my hardrive or play media. Help

To help narrow down the issue:

What happens when you go to Insert > Video > This Device? Do you get an error message? If yes, please provide the exact message.

What type of video are you trying to insert, such as .mp4, .mov, or .avi?

Can the same video play normally outside PowerPoint using Windows Media Player or another video player?

Also, in PowerPoint, go to File > Account > About PowerPoint and let me know the version/build shown there.

As a quick test, if you have an MP4 video encoded with H.264 video and AAC audio, try inserting that and see whether it works.

Common causes are an unsupported video format or codec.

Try this:

Use a supported format.
- Recommended video format: .mp4
- Recommended encoding: H.264 video with AAC audio
- Simply renaming a file extension usually does not fix the problem if the codec inside the file is unsupported.
Reinsert the video from PowerPoint.
- Open the presentation in Normal view.
- Select the target slide.
- Go to Insert > Video > This Device (or Video on My PC).
- Select the file and choose Insert.
If the file is already on a slide but will not play, check whether it is linked instead of embedded.
- Go to File > Info.
- Under Optimize Media Compatibility, look for media details.
- If PowerPoint shows View Links, select it to see where the linked video is stored.
- Broken links can prevent playback. Keeping the presentation and video in the same folder helps avoid this.
If PowerPoint says it cannot insert the selected file, convert the video to the recommended format.
- Microsoft recommends converting unsupported media to .mp4 (H.264/AAC).
- This is the best compatibility option across PowerPoint on Windows and Mac.
If the file format is supported but playback still fails, a codec may be missing on Windows.
- Install the Media Feature Pack for Windows 10/11 if needed.
- Microsoft also notes that converting the media file is usually easier than trying to identify and fix an individual codec problem.
If the presentation was created by someone else, ask the author to run Optimize Compatibility before sharing it.

If the video is online rather than stored on the hard drive, it must stay connected to the internet to play.
- Online videos also do not support all PowerPoint playback features such as Trim.

For best results, use local .mp4 H.264/AAC files and embed them directly instead of linking when possible.
