Using New Outlook on Windows for professional communication and productivity
This can happen when the server-side Inbox view is corrupted. Classic Outlook can still open the Inbox because it uses a local cached mailbox and a different protocol, while Outlook on the web, new Outlook, and Outlook Mobile rely on the cloud-rendered Inbox view.
Try these steps in order:
- Turn off Focused Inbox in Outlook on the web.
- Go to Settings > Mail > Layout.
- Under Focused Inbox, choose Don’t sort my messages.
- Review and temporarily disable Inbox rules, conditional formatting, or Sweep settings.
- In Outlook on the web, go to Settings > Mail.
- Open Rules, Conditional Formatting, and Sweep.
- Turn them off temporarily, then test whether the Inbox opens.
- Change the Reading Pane position.
- In Outlook on the web, go to Settings > Mail > Layout.
- Change the reading pane to a different position, such as Fill screen.
- Set sorting to Newest on top.
- This can force the server to rewrite the view state.
- Test in an incognito or private browser window.
- This helps rule out cached browser data or extensions affecting the Inbox view.
- If the issue continues, involve the IT administrator.
- Admin-side actions may be needed to disable Focused Inbox at the server level, review or disable Inbox rules, perform deeper mailbox checks, or raise a support ticket with Microsoft.
Since Sent Items and Drafts still load, the issue is more likely tied to the Inbox view state than to the whole mailbox.
