This can be normal on some Windows 11 PCs, especially newer devices. Windows 11 may use updated sleep behavior and, on some hardware, background activity or charging can cause the fan to keep running or spin faster even when the lid is closed or the PC appears to be asleep.
Try these Windows 11 settings first:
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Open Power mode and set it to Recommended. This helps limit fan speed and provides quieter operation.
- In the same area, open Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Reduce Make my device sleep after to a shorter value.
- Open Energy recommendations at Start > Settings > System > Power & battery > Energy recommendations.
- Apply Set the power mode for best energy efficiency.
- Apply Put my device to sleep after 3 (or 10) minutes if it is offered.
If the PC is a laptop, also check lid and power button behavior:
- Search for Control Panel from the taskbar.
- Go to System and Security.
- Under Power Options, select Choose what the power buttons do.
- Select Change settings that are currently unavailable.
- For When I close the lid, choose Sleep.
- Select Save changes.
Important points from Microsoft guidance:
- Fan activity can increase when the device is under workload, charging, or in a warm room.
- During the first 24 hours after setup, background updates, app installs, and syncing can make fans run more often.
- On Surface devices, Microsoft specifically states that Recommended power mode helps limit fan speed.
If this is a Surface and the fan still runs continuously in sleep, use the Surface app or Get Help for device-specific support.
