I would like to clarify the correct interpretation of the Microsoft Learn documentation regarding Release Channels and Preview features.

I have reviewed the following two Microsoft Learn articles, but the descriptions appear to imply different relationships between Preview features and the Monthly / Semi-annual channels.

1. Model-driven app release channels

  • The Monthly channel and Semi-annual channel are not Preview or Early Access programs.

Release Channels control how frequently GA-ready features are enabled for users.

2. Opt in to early access updates

Monthly channel: Preview feature update = Weekly

Semi-annual channel: Preview features = No preview features

Based on the first article, my understanding is that Public Preview and Release Channels are separate concepts, and that configuring an environment to use the Monthly channel does not necessarily mean that Public Preview features will be provided to that environment.

However, the second article appears to suggest that Preview features can be made available through the Monthly channel, while Preview features are not provided through the Semi-annual channel.

Could you please clarify the correct interpretation of these two descriptions?

When a feature is listed as Public Preview in the Release Plan, is it generally expected to be made available first to Monthly channel environments, while Semi-annual channel environments do not receive the feature until it reaches GA?

Or are Public Preview / GA in the Release Plan and Monthly / Semi-annual channel independent concepts, meaning that the channel through which a Public Preview feature is delivered depends on the individual feature?

In the second article, does Monthly channel = Preview feature update: Weekly and Semi-annual channel = No preview features refer to the same Public Preview status that is shown in the Release Plan, or does it refer to a different type of Preview / Early Access functionality?

Is there an official way to determine in advance whether a specific feature will be released to the Monthly channel first and the Semi-annual channel later? If the Public Preview and GA dates in the Release Plan are not sufficient to determine this, which information should we check, such as Feature Build, Target Semi-Annual Release, Release Planner, or Message Center?

As a concrete example, we are reviewing the Dynamics 365 Sales Copy Opportunity feature. The Release Plan lists both a Public Preview date and a GA date. However, when we tested the feature by switching between the Monthly channel and Semi-annual channel in the same test environment, the Copy Opportunity feature appeared in both channels.

Because of this, we would like to understand whether the following operational model can reliably provide a validation period before production rollout:

Development / Sandbox = Monthly channel Production = Semi-annual channel

Our expectation is that new features can first be validated in the Development environment, and that there will be a period of time before the same features are enabled in the Production environment.

Is this expected behavior for Release Channels, or is the timing difference between Monthly and Semi-annual channels feature-specific and therefore not guaranteed?

Most importantly, after identifying a new feature in the Release Plan, what is the official method for determining when that specific feature will actually become available in the Monthly channel and in the Semi-annual channel?

Hi Dai Yuki(代 友輝)

Thanks for sharing this!

This community forum is primarily user-to-user support, so we can't provide authoritative interpretations of Microsoft Learn documentation. If you believe the documentation is unclear or contradictory, the best route is to submit feedback directly from the Learn article using the "Feedback" button at the bottom of the page so it reaches the documentation owners. You can also raise the question in the relevant Dynamics 365 / Power Platform community channels where the product team and documentation team may be able to provide clarification. The documentation itself notes that release channels and preview programs are separate concepts, but questions about specific feature rollout behavior are best confirmed by Microsoft directly.

Have a great day!
