A GroupMe account can only be associated with one mobile number, and each GroupMe account requires a unique phone number. If the number is already tied to another account, it cannot be used on a different GroupMe account until it is removed from the other one.
For the sign-in problem, use this path:
- Force-close and reopen GroupMe.
- Update to the latest version of GroupMe.
- Try signing in on the web at groupme.com if the mobile app is failing.
- Reset the password at forgot_password.
- If unsure which email is on the account, try the password reset flow with each email address that may have been used, including the Gmail address.
- If the correct email is found but that inbox cannot be accessed, recover access to that email account first.
If access to the old GroupMe account is still possible, the phone number can be updated from the profile settings:
- In the web app: sign in, select the avatar, select Edit next to the current phone number, enter the new phone number, select Submit, then enter the PIN sent by text.
If the number is believed to be attached to an account that cannot be accessed, contact GroupMe support and include the phone number and any email addresses that may have been used so support can help locate the account.
