When I try to save a new PowerPoint presentation, it highlights the "save as" button but won't let me save anything. It locks up and I have to cntr, alt, delete to get out of it. The same thing is happening in excel as well.

    Hi!

If the problem occurs with another Office app, it is likely a general Office issue.

    One question:

    • Does the program freeze when you click Save, or does it freeze when you click Save and then choose the file path and name?

While I wait for your reply, try performing an online repair of Office:

    1. Open Windows Settings (Windows + I) > Apps > Apps & Features.
    2. Search for "Microsoft 365" or "Microsoft Office <Year> (2019, 2021)" > Click on the app > Change > Online Repair > Repair.
    3. When the repair is complete, restart your computer.

Since it happens in both PowerPoint and Excel, this points more to an Office app issue than to a single presentation file.

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Start the app in Safe Mode to rule out add-ins.
      • Press Windows key + R.
      • Type excel /safe and press Enter.
      • For PowerPoint, use powerpnt /safe.
      • If saving works in Safe Mode, disable add-ins from File > Options > Add-ins.
    2. Check whether Office is running as Administrator.
      • Right-click the Office app shortcut.
      • Select Properties > Compatibility.
      • Make sure Run this program as an administrator is unchecked.
      • Running Office elevated can interfere with normal file handling and saving.
    3. Try saving to a simple local folder.
      • In PowerPoint, use File > Save As > This PC > Browse.
      • Save to a local folder such as Documents instead of a synced or restricted location.
      • Name the file and select Save.
    4. If the newer Save screen is where it freezes, switch to the classic save dialog.
      • In an Office app, go to File > Options > Save.
      • Enable Don’t show the Backstage when opening or saving files.
      • Then try saving again.
    5. If the issue continues across apps, test with a new Windows user profile.
      • If saving works there, the problem is likely related to the current user profile rather than Office itself.

If the apps still lock up after these steps, the strongest clues from the available guidance are add-ins, administrator mode, or a damaged user profile.
