Word app on iPad crashes whenever i try to copy text

Word for iPad crashes whenever I try to copy text. Word closes immediately when I select and copy even a single word. This happens with my existing document and also with a brand-new blank document.

I have already updated Word and iPadOS, restarted the iPad, disabled Background App Refresh, and tested on a second iPad. The same problem occurs on both iPads.

The same Word document works correctly on my iPhone: I can select and copy text normally.

As a workaround, I opened the document in Pages on iPad and copying works correctly there.

Please investigate the copy-to-clipboard crash in Word for iPad.

    Hi Lavinia

Thank you for sharing the details of your situation.

As this is a user-to-user community forum, I do not have the ability to directly access or modify your account or service. However, I can provide guidance, recommend next steps, share applicable resources, and direct you to the appropriate support channels so the issue can be investigated further.

Based on the information you provided, this issue does not appear to be related to a specific Word document or a single iPad device. Since Word crashes when copying text from both an existing document and a brand-new blank document, and the same behavior occurs on two separate iPads, the issue appears to be isolated to Word for iPad’s copy-to-clipboard functionality.

It is also helpful to know that the same document works correctly in Word on your iPhone, and that copying works as expected when the document is opened in Pages on iPad. This suggests that the document itself and the iPadOS clipboard are likely not the root cause.

In the meantime, here are some workarounds you can try:

    1. Sign out of Word on the iPad, then sign back in.
    2. Uninstall Word from the iPad, restart the device, then reinstall Word from the App Store.
    3. Test copying text using both the touch menu and, if available, an external keyboard shortcut such as Command + C.
    4. Test whether the issue occurs while connected to a different network or while offline.
    5. Continue using Pages as a temporary workaround if you need to copy text urgently.

I also recommend reporting this issue directly from the Word app on your iPad. You can follow the steps below:

    • Open Microsoft Word on the iPad.
    • Tap the profile icon.
    • Choose Help & Feedback > Tell us what can be better.
    • In the feedback description, please include that Word crashes immediately when copying selected text, even in a blank document, and that the issue reproduces on two iPads but not on iPhone or Pages.

If this account is provided by your school, please reach out to your school IT administrator and ask them to report the issue to Microsoft Support through the Microsoft 365 admin center. They can check Health > Service health and use Report an issue if the problem is not already listed. If needed, they can also open a support ticket with Microsoft Support so the issue can be investigated further and tracked through an official support case.

I hope this information is helpful. Should you have any further questions or need additional assistance, please feel free to share them in the comment below. I'm very happy to help.
