Try these checks in order:
- Confirm the correct account is signed in. Copilot in Outlook requires the account signed into Microsoft 365 to have the Copilot entitlement. In Outlook and other Microsoft 365 apps, verify the signed-in account under File > Account.
- Refresh the license. In any Microsoft 365 app, go to File > Account > Update License. Then close and restart all Microsoft 365 apps.
- Update Office. Make sure Outlook is on the latest build. In File > Account, use Update Options > Update Now.
- Check where Copilot should appear. In Outlook on the web, Copilot is available in the Home tab for eligible subscribers. In classic Outlook for Windows, Copilot chat is available from the Copilot icon in the left app bar.
- If drafting email in new Outlook or Outlook on the web, make sure the message is not plain text. Draft with Copilot does not support plain text messages there. Change this in Settings > Mail > Compose and reply > HTML.
- Check Outlook-specific limitations. Copilot scenarios in Outlook are only available on the primary mailbox. They are not available for archive mailboxes, group mailboxes, shared mailboxes, or delegate mailboxes. They are also not supported for mailboxes not hosted on Exchange Online. Copilot in Outlook also cannot access S/MIME or Double Key Encryption encrypted emails.
- If using chat in Outlook, verify the supported app and account type. Chat with Copilot in Outlook is available with a work or school account. The FAQ states chat is available in new Outlook for Windows and Outlook on the web. Another support article also states the chat experience is now available in classic Outlook for Windows from the left app bar.
- If Copilot was working and suddenly disappeared, restart Outlook after checking for a known service issue. A documented incident affected visibility of the Copilot button and Copilot Chat in Outlook clients. One recommended mitigation was to restart Outlook after the service fix rollout.
- If it still does not work, check with the IT admin. If Copilot cannot be accessed in Outlook, Microsoft’s Outlook Copilot guidance says to check with the IT admin.
Also review anything Copilot generates before sending or relying on it.
