How to fix the black screen issue after a Windows system update, where the computer cannot wake from sleep and also shows a black screen with no response when restarting?

On August 12, my computer automatically installed system updates and required a restart. However, I did not restart immediately. After some time, the computer went into sleep mode with a black screen. When I tried to wake it up, I found that it failed. I then forced a shutdown and restarted. Upon booting, I saw that the system was applying updates. After the update, the screen went black and there was no response. I forced a restart again, and again it showed that updates were being applied; the progress reached 100% and then black screen with no response again. After waiting for a while, I forced a restart one last time, and this time the computer booted successfully to the desktop. Since then, the computer cannot wake from sleep (black screen) and restarting also results in a black screen with no response. Only a normal shutdown followed by powering on works to get to the desktop.

So far, I have tried the following common fixes found online: modifying power plan settings, adjusting Device Manager settings, using Windows Update repair, reinstalling both Intel and Nvidia graphics drivers, changing BIOS to hybrid mode, updating Intel graphics drivers, etc. None of these resolved the issue.

Additional note: The black screen upon restart occurs not only when I manually restart but also during automatic restarts required by system updates. If an update requires multiple restarts, I encounter the black screen issue each time.

My device is a Legion Y9000P IRX8 (2023 model).

Since the issue started immediately after Windows updates and now affects both wake from sleep and restart, use this order of checks:

    1. Try the built-in black screen recovery shortcuts when the screen goes black
      • Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver.
      • Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to see whether the security screen appears.
      • Press Windows + P, then press P again and Enter to cycle display modes.
      • If the screen returns, the problem is likely tied to display output or the graphics stack.
    2. Force a full power-off instead of using Restart
      • Since normal shutdown followed by power-on works, continue using that path temporarily.
      • If the device is stuck on a black screen, hold the power button for 20 seconds to force restart.
      • This is a workaround, not a fix.
    3. Focus on sleep and restart as separate symptoms of the same post-update black screen condition
      • Microsoft documents that blank or black screens after an update are often linked to incompatible drivers or incomplete updates.
      • A blank screen when waking can also be tied to a stalled Windows process or driver issue.
    4. If the black screen appears specifically during or after Windows Update restarts
      • Let the device sit for several minutes before forcing power off.
      • On some Windows update black screen cases, control can return after 5 to 10 minutes.
    5. Install the latest Windows updates fully through Windows Update
      • Some black screen issues after updates are resolved by later Windows updates.
      • If a newer update is available, install it and restart again.
    6. If the issue continues, use Microsoft’s blank screen troubleshooting path
      • Check power and display connections.
      • Use the keyboard recovery shortcuts above.
      • If Ctrl + Alt + Del works, open Task Manager and restart Windows Explorer.

Based on the described behavior, the strongest supported conclusion is that this is a post-update black screen problem likely involving the display/graphics path during sleep resume and restart, and the most relevant supported actions are the keyboard recovery steps, allowing extra time during update-related black screens, and fully applying later Windows updates.

By re-writing keys to (DO-NOT-TRUST) wtf? Got new keys from windows, formatted my entire system, ran checks on the drives, new fresh install of windows, got all the "official" garbage updates, 100% working for 2days, oh Joy! just so it can tell me "theres an error, redownload and perform "in-place" updgrade", did that to now have a complete black screen, running my PC at 100% in the background.

Hi, thank you for patiently waiting. After checking and analyzing the event logs, there is an error with your Intel® Graphics Software Service, which is causing the issue. To sort out the problem, kindly follow the steps below:

I recommend running a Clean installation of the Intel driver and Nvidia driver. This will remove all entries and replace them with compatible ones. Kindly follow the steps from the link below:

For Intel, kindly follow the steps from this link:

Hi, I'm Bernard. I'm happy to help!

Based on your initial input, it seems that there is a display driver-related issue on the PC. To confirm, can you still use the affected device? If so, I need to analyze the error. Can you please check the System logs on the PC so I can further examine the root cause of the issue?

To share the System logs, please follow the steps in the link below:

Press the Windows key + X, then select "Event Viewer"

Click the drop-down of "Windows logs"

Right-click System > click Filter Current logs > Check: Critical, Warning, and Error > Hit OK

On the right pane, click "Save Filtered Log File As..."

Save the System logs file to your desktop and share it by following the steps from the link:

Note: You can also use your preferred cloud storage to upload and share the logs.
