How to fix PowerPoint files embedded into Sharepoint displaying the bottom button panel again?

Files embedded onto Sharepoint page have undergone a change. Previously, all file types used (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) have always offered a black bar underneath the preview, allowing you to use a short panel of buttons that allow you to open the file on a new browser tab, for example. I've added an image to highlight using the colour Blue, to show how this looks with Excel type files.

As of last week, it seems this black bar is no longer available for PowerPoint type files, meaning you are only able to access the miniature size/version of the file, instead of being able to open it in a new tab via the panel - indicated the lack of the panel in Red for illustration purposes

It seems something has changed and I'd like to revert it - it's unclear if this is a Microsoft change, but no changes have been made on our Sharepoint as far as I'm aware.

Just came here to report that we are having the same issue with PowerPoint files embedded in SharePoint pages. I was able to reproduce it in multiple tenants and it does not matter wether the page / webpart was already existing or recently created.

I checked the browser console (Chrome) and found an error which most likely has something to do with this issue.

Hi Niels thank you for your finding. Honestly, reproducing this across multiple tenants, pages, and web parts pretty much confirms it's a service-side issue rather than a setup issue on your page. That CSP error in the console where it blocks the inline event handler along with the ViewingApp.js and Babylon.js entries, points right to a broken rendering layer in the PowerPoint viewer. It completely explains why the slides render weirdly, the toolbar controls disappear, and that first slide image gets stuck over the toolbar space.

Since PowerPoint is definitely still supported on the File and Media web part (Use the File and Media web part | Microsoft Support), your best bet is to open a ticket with Microsoft Support so they can investigate it on the backend. You can follow the instruction here: Get support - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn. When you submit it, make sure to mention that it's reproducible across different tenants and attach those CSP, ViewingApp.js, and Babylon.js console logs. That should help them skip the basic troubleshooting steps and send it straight to the right team.

My powerpoints for my classes are embedded in a learning platform ... - luckely I provided also a link to the powerpoint.

I just want to echo other reports of the issue.

We have the same problem - no access to the control toolbar and all of our users can no longer see presentations in full screen or open within the full powerpoint application.

We have also tried the 5 steps listed above with no positive results.

If you are in an organization (business or education), ask the IT support or local admin to report the error directly to Microsoft.

Based on the other messages here, several users appear to be affected, meaning that there is a good chance that the problem will be fixed quickly. Nobody here will be able to specify a time frame, though.

Hi,

Based on the screenshot, it looks like the PowerPoint is being displayed through the SharePoint File and Media (File Viewer) web part.

Microsoft’s current documentation indicates that files such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint can be displayed through this web part, and that a toolbar is available when hovering over the file in view mode. The toolbar can include actions such as opening the file in a new window.

Since the toolbar is still available for your Excel files but is missing specifically for PowerPoint files, I would first check whether this is limited to the PowerPoint viewer rather than a change to the SharePoint page configuration.

Could you please try the following?

Hover the mouse over the bottom area of the PowerPoint preview and check whether the toolbar appears.
Open the same SharePoint page in an InPrivate/Incognito browser window and test the PowerPoint again.
Test the page in another supported browser, if available.
Add a different .pptx file to the same File and Media web part and check whether the toolbar is also missing.
If possible, add the same PowerPoint file to a new test SharePoint page using a new File and Media web part and compare the result.

If the toolbar is missing for multiple PowerPoint files and also occurs on a newly created File and Media web part, while Excel/Word files continue to show the toolbar, this would point more toward a change or issue in the PowerPoint viewing experience rather than a setting on the existing SharePoint page.

At this time, I have not found a Microsoft-documented setting that allows the File and Media web part toolbar to be manually restored for PowerPoint files. Microsoft’s documentation still describes the toolbar as part of the viewer experience.

If the behavior can be reproduced with a new PowerPoint file and a new File and Media web part, please provide the SharePoint page URL (if it can be shared), the browser/version being used, and whether the issue occurs for other users as well. I have tried the 5 steps as listed above.

The preview does not appear (this was the first indication that led me to writing this post - the issue first already appeared on Friday and has been reported by multiple people in my organization).

The issue remains on Microsoft Edge's InPrivate mode.

The issue remains also on Google Chrome & Incognito respectively.

A different .pptx file was uploaded to another internal test page and the changes were saved as a draft, and also published. The issue remains.

I believe you are right about this rather being a change or issue in the PowerPoint viewing experience than anything to necessarily do with SharePoint.

The way that the UI appears does not seem intentional and it's likely a bug/issue. Where the toolbar generally would appear is replaced with a low-quality version sprite/image of the title page - even if I move to other slides of the same presentation, the low-quality first slide image remains where the toolbar would usually be found:

Based on your testing, the issue does not appear to be related to a specific PowerPoint file, browser, SharePoint page, or File and Media web part configuration. The fact that multiple users are affected and that the same behavior occurs with newly uploaded files and a newly created test page is especially significant.

The low-quality first-slide image remaining in place of the toolbar, even when navigating to other slides, also points more toward an issue with how the PowerPoint content is being rendered in the embedded viewer.

Microsoft’s current documentation still describes PowerPoint as a supported file type for the File and Media web part and documents the viewer toolbar and its actions. I have not found a Microsoft-published notice indicating that the PowerPoint toolbar was intentionally removed. For your reference: Using web parts on SharePoint pages | Microsoft Support

At this point, I would treat this as a likely service-side PowerPoint viewer/rendering issue rather than something that can be corrected through a SharePoint setting.

If the toolbar functionality is important for your users, I recommend opening a Microsoft 365 support request so the service team can investigate the behavior in your tenant and determine whether there is an ongoing incident or recent service change affecting the PowerPoint viewer.

As a temporary workaround, users can open the PowerPoint file directly from the SharePoint document library instead of relying on the embedded viewer.
