Use of PowerPoint, Excel and Word on a second device - surface 4

Spent hours chatting with support to resolve accessing office 365 products on my surface 4 using my active 365 account. Keep getting messages that versions of PowerPoint, Word, Excel are not supported with and need to buy 365 when I already have an active subscription using my surface 7 device. Chat support recommended I contact technical support to resolve after ensuring my correct email is associated with account, that I have only one account, and finally re-installing 365 on my surface 4. Problem continues and would like a live person to connect to my surface 4 to help resolve.

    Hi dan sheehan,

I can understand how frustrating this must be, especially after already spending time with support, confirming the correct account, and reinstalling Microsoft 365 on your Surface 4, only to continue seeing messages that Word, Excel, or PowerPoint are unsupported or require another purchase. Based on what you've described, this may be an activation, licensing, or Office installation recognition issue rather than a subscription problem alone.

To help narrow this down further, could you please provide a few details:

    1. What is the exact error message you see when opening Word, Excel, or PowerPoint on the Surface 4?
    2. Which Surface 4 device are you using (for example, Surface Pro 4 or Surface Laptop 4)?
    3. What version of Windows is installed on that device?
    4. In Word > File > Account, what is shown under Product Information?
    5. When you sign in to Microsoft Account Services, do you see your active Microsoft 365 subscription listed under the same account you're using on the Surface 4?

This information will help determine whether the issue is related to licensing activation, Office version compatibility, or a device-specific Office configuration. Once you share those details, the community can provide more targeted guidance.

For a Microsoft 365 for home subscription, Office on the second device must be signed in with the same Microsoft account that owns the subscription. If the apps on the Surface 4 show that Office needs to be purchased, the device is typically signed in with the wrong account or the license is not being picked up correctly.

Try this on the Surface 4:

    1. Open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.
    2. Go to File > Account.
    3. If another account is shown, select Sign out.
    4. Sign back in with the same Microsoft account used on the Surface 7 that has the active Microsoft 365 subscription.
    5. If the app shows Not licensed, use Change license and sign in again with that same subscription account.

If the issue continues and a live support person is needed:

    1. Use the Get Help app or browser to contact support.
    2. In the support flow, type Contact support or agent support.
    3. Select Microsoft 365 and Office.
    4. Select Technical Support or Activate my product.
    5. Choose Chat with a support agent in your web browser or request a call back.

Microsoft states that Microsoft 365 subscription customers for home can get chat or call back support from technical support experts.
