- Make sure Office is fully up to date, then continue troubleshooting in order. Microsoft’s guidance for "stopped working" errors is to install the latest Office updates first.
- Repair the Office installation from Windows 11:
- Right-click Start > Installed apps.
- Find the Microsoft 365 or Office product.
- Select the ... menu > Modify.
- If the install is Click-to-run, choose Online Repair > Repair. This is more thorough than Quick Repair.
- If the install is MSI-based, choose Repair > Continue.
- Check Windows and device drivers, because older drivers can break Office apps after an OS upgrade:
- Start > type settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- If the issue continues, update these drivers from the device manufacturer: video card, printer, mouse, and keyboard.
- On laptops, also check the laptop manufacturer site for updated device-specific files.
- If the apps still show "stopped working," use Microsoft’s guided support for Office problems.
- If more help is needed, contact Microsoft support from the Office support pages:
- Go to the relevant Help Center.
- At the bottom of the page, select Contact Us.
- Type Contact Support in the Tell me what you want to do box.
- Select Contact Support.
- Support availability depends on the product type:
- Microsoft 365 subscriptions include chat and call back support.
- Office 2021 one-time purchase includes chat and call back for activation only.
