touch screen no longer works

Try these steps in order:

1. Restart the device.
   • If the touchscreen starts working again after restart, the issue was temporary.
2. Check for Windows updates.
   • In Windows 11: right-click Start > Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options.
   • Turn Receive updates for other Microsoft products to On.
   • Select Optional updates and install all available optional updates.
   • Go back to Windows Update, select Check for updates, install everything available, then restart.
3. Test whether the problem is Windows or hardware.
   • Shut down the Surface.
   • Press and hold Volume up, then press Power until the Microsoft or Surface logo appears.
   • In UEFI, try touching the screen.
   • If touch does not work in UEFI, the touchscreen likely has a hardware failure and needs service.
   • If touch does work in UEFI, restart Windows and continue with driver steps.
4. Reinstall the touchscreen driver.
   • Warning: Do not do this on Surface Pro X. On that device, uninstalling drivers may require a full reset to restore them.
   • Search for Device Manager and open it.
   • Expand Human Interface Devices.
   • Right-click Intel(R) Precise Touch Device > Uninstall device > Uninstall if it appears.
   • Right-click HID-compliant touch screen > Uninstall device > Uninstall.
   • If there are two HID-compliant touch screen entries, uninstall both.
   • In Action, select Scan for hardware changes.
   • Restart the device if needed. Windows should reinstall the touchscreen driver when connected to the internet.
5. If the touch driver or firmware is missing in Device Manager:
   • Manually install drivers and firmware for the Surface device.
6. If using a Surface, check Surface driver and firmware health.
   • Open the Surface app.
   • Expand Help & support.
   • If updates are available, select Check for updates to open Windows Update and install them.
7. If touch still does not work, reset the device.
   • Warning: Reset can remove apps and settings. Back up data first.
   • Use Reset this PC and then test touch again after setup.
8. If the touchscreen still does not respond after these steps, submit a service order.
   • For Surface devices, Microsoft support and repair options are available.

If the issue is specifically that touch does not respond on part or all of the screen, or taps register in the wrong place, the recommended next step is service.
