Use one of these supported ways to get the Word file onto the PC:
- In OneDrive on the web, select the Word file.
- Select Download from the top menu.
- If the browser asks, choose Save or Save As and pick a folder on the PC such as Desktop or Downloads.
If the file is already open in Word for the web:
- Go to File > Create a Copy.
- Select Download a copy.
- The copy is saved to the Downloads folder.
If the file is in a Shared view, it cannot be downloaded directly from there. Open the file first and save a copy to a location of choice.
If the Download button is missing after refreshing the page while viewing a folder, go up one folder level and come back, or close the browser tab and open the folder again.
If downloading from OneDrive is needed regularly, the OneDrive desktop app can keep files on the computer. On Windows 11, the app is already available. After signing in, files in the OneDrive folder on the PC are available there, and changes sync when connected to the internet.
To upload a downloaded file later to a website, save it outside the OneDrive folder if the goal is to keep a separate local copy.
