If Windows 11 is not activated, some personalization and related settings can be restricted. Start with these steps:
- Check that the device is running the latest Windows 11 version.
- In the taskbar search box, type winver and open Winver to confirm the version.
- Open activation status.
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Activation.
- Run the Activation troubleshooter.
- In Activation, select Troubleshoot.
- This requires an administrator account.
- The Troubleshoot option appears only when Windows is not activated.
- Windows activation also requires an internet connection.
- If there is no valid license found, use one of these options:
- Select Change product key and enter the 25-character product key.
- If there is no valid product key, select Go to Microsoft Store and follow the prompts to buy a digital license.
- If the error code changes after troubleshooting, use the new error code to follow the matching fix.
- If the device came with Windows preinstalled and activation failed from the start, contact the device manufacturer.
- If the device was bought from a store and it says there is no product key, that can indicate the installed license is not valid for personal use in some cases. Contact the store and ask for a valid license key if one was included with the purchase.
If the warning says Your Windows License Will Expire Soon, that usually means a volume license client is installed. Activation is then typically managed by an organization, and the system administrator needs to handle it.
