Is Windows Defender enough security

For most home users on Windows 11, Microsoft Defender Antivirus is enough and another antivirus such as McAfee is not necessary.

Windows already includes Microsoft Defender Antivirus, which helps protect against viruses, spyware, and other malware. It is built into Windows and is always on. Windows Security is the app that shows protection status and settings, while Microsoft Defender Antivirus is the antivirus engine.

If another antivirus product is installed, Microsoft Defender Antivirus typically turns off its active protection on consumer Windows devices. Running two real-time antimalware products at the same time can cause problems.

If there is also a Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription, the Microsoft Defender app adds cross-device security features and notifications, but that is different from the built-in Windows antivirus.

A separate product like McAfee only makes sense if extra bundled features are specifically wanted, such as services outside core antivirus protection. For basic malware protection on a home Windows 11 PC, Microsoft Defender Antivirus is generally sufficient.
