Managing profiles and sync in Microsoft Edge on Windows 10
This browser is no longer supported.
Upgrade to Microsoft Edge to take advantage of the latest features, security updates, and technical support.
My son's Windows 11 PC is set up with his personal Microsoft account using an iCloud email address.
His personal Microsoft account is working correctly elsewhere:
However, when we try to sign his Microsoft Edge browser profile into that same personal Microsoft account, authentication completes and then Edge displays:
AADSTS50020 – User account '[his iCloud email]' is a personal Microsoft account. Personal Microsoft accounts are not supported for this application unless explicitly invited to an organization.
The problem occurs only when signing the Edge browser profile into his personal Microsoft account.
We have already:
edge://policy has no policies configured.edge://signin-internals; Edge shows Not Signed In.Please investigate why Microsoft Edge profile sign-in is routing his personal Microsoft account through an organizational/Entra ID authentication flow and producing AADSTS50020.

Managing profiles and sync in Microsoft Edge on Windows 10
Hello Amy McPherren,
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.
As you've already pointed out, this point more into your son account is being led to an Entra authentication flow. Before we proceed, may I have a photo of the situation to check for you? Please remember to remove all personal information before posting. Also, can you please type dsregcmd /status in an elevated command prompt and let me know if any of these is yes.
In the meantime, please try to create a local user profile on your computer and see if you can create a new Edge profile with your son's account there.
I'm waiting for your reply.

The behavior points to a profile/account mismatch or stale cached credentials in Edge rather than a problem with the personal Microsoft account itself. The strongest evidence is that the same account works at account.microsoft.com and in an InPrivate window, but fails only for the Edge profile sign-in flow.
Given the steps already completed, the next supported checks are:
edge://settings/privacyedge://settings/profiles and try the profile sign-in againMicrosoftAccount or login.microsoftonline.comedge://settings/profilesedge://settings/helphttps://login.microsoftonline.comhttps://login.live.comhttps://account.live.comhttps://graph.microsoft.comAbout the AADSTS50020 message itself: that error occurs when a personal Microsoft account is sent to an organizational Microsoft Entra endpoint or application that does not accept personal accounts. In the Edge scenario described here, the supported documentation does not identify a separate Edge setting that forces personal profile sign-in through Entra ID when edge://policy is empty. The documented causes that fit this case are cached credentials, conflicting profiles, Windows account integration issues, or network/authentication path issues.
If the issue still persists after the steps above, collect the following and include them with a support request:
